Some of the car show guys use nothing but the highest quality Lacquer and no less than 5 coats. The vehical is taken down to to bear metal first. $10,000 - $12,000 is very common and it takes a long time to get it done right. Mike

In my body shop days, We would charge between $5-7K for a job like that.
A basic same-color job would start at $2000 w/o any body work.

You get what you pay for...

Does anybody still use lacquer? Haven't seen much of it in years and years.

I paid around 2700 for my mustang, with serious body work done to rust. I have been told by several painters that they woulda charged double that if not more.

When you guys talk about doing lots of body work before painting, are you talking about repairing rust, dents, etc?

If there is really no repair body work to be done, then the price should be a little cheaper right?

Correct. Repair work can be very expensive and isn't part of the paint job - they charge extra for it. But smoothing out nicks and little scratches and parking lot dings and stuff is also part of what we mean. Some cheapo shops will paint right over them. Most will at least feather them out decently. But a good shop will make sure the reflections are smooooth when it's done - little nicks and stuff take a bit of time to really make disappear.

what could i get for $1200 ?

my 4runner is a fading red and i want to go to a different solid color, i figured white would be the cheapest but i would also like to go off-white.

could i be able to repaint my truck off-white from the fading red for about $1200?

For $1200 in materials, maybe...

My last paint job - 20 years ago - was $650 in materials (Sikkens) alone. Color change - $5-7K done right with a "warranty." If you have rust, yo may not get the warranty

And I would doubt you'll get the entire engine compartment done for that price - too much effort.

I was thinking of just getting the rust spots out, and then getting it painted just the primer with a clear coat. I figure if I scratch it up, I can just take a can of primer and spray over it. Obviously I don't care what it looks like, I just want it to protect the metal. How much would a job like this go for aprox?

We had our 2002 4runner repainted about 6 months ago. Same color (maroon), no door jambs, no rear hatch. They had to do some minor repair of rock chips on hood, etc. It cost about $4,300. It looks good, I'm please with it for the most part.

im afraid im not experienced enough for the roll on job

i suppose i can do without painting my engine bay. . .

but i would also want to black out all the chrome on the vehicle as well (actually, the bumpers i would want that dark grey like the factory bumpers came with)

i will definitely do some of the prep work, like take off the decal stickers, remove grille, door locks, handles, roof rack, etc., and do a wet sand or two myself
