Location to wire factory tach wire to

Here is what I did on my 92 2wd pickup 4cyl. Got the dash cluster with tach from a 93 4runner v6 automatic. Also used the 4runner oil pressue sender needed for new dash, screwed right into 4cyl block. See photos for locations, The diagnostic port is under hood next to fuse box.

Cluster swap question

Im planning on doing the cluster swap today and already have the sr5 gueage cluster. HOWEVER the cluster i bought - The tach needle when i got it was basically pointed completely down off the guage. i assumed with shipping it got bumped around so i removed it and put it back on so the needle would point to 0, but now the needle is kind of floating (not resting completely on 0) is this normal? once plugged in will the needle sit down where its supposed to or do i need to adjust something?

I don't think it would be a big deal but if you want just carefully pull of the needle, I used a fork when I removed my speedo needle, and place back carefully.
Don't forget to unplug the oil pressure switch, it can be unplugged from the passenger side thru the wheel well, tape the connector off until you get the right pressure switch.

good luck, its really simple.

Cluster swap question

thanks man. got it in and it works perfect - your idea worked. Do you know which oil pressure sender i need so the guage will work? Its a 3vze. and in disconnecting the wire for it i noticed there was another wire already hanging there not connected to anything. any idea what that one is for?

Awesome write up. Couple questions. Sr5 swap in my 89 22re. Cluster came out of who knows what. Everything seems to work except fuel gauge. Resistance seems to spec. Old cluster fuel gauge worked so I don't think it would be the sender. Any ideas?

I have swapped several gauges and for the 84-88 gauges that have the vertical and horizontal marks on the face. I do NOT recommend pulling the needle for this style cluster. The needle has splines on it that connect it to the shaft of the assembly. I would recommend this way instead.

issue with sr5 swap

So got my new cluster in my 89 22re. Gauges work great but ... now taillights, side marker lights and Gauge lights won't work. Fuse is good, relay is good. Any ideas?

I bought this cluster off ebay.

My question is what is that amplifier thing in the middle with the wires coming out of it?

Also, would I have to do anything differently to hook this up to a 3rz swapper 92 pickup?

Question

Hi,
I am planning on doing a cluster swap, however I am in Australia (that means km/h) and can only find sr5 clusters for sale in the USA (i need the odometer in km not miles and I don't like the look of the dual units on the speedo)

The question: are the electronic speedo units (or at least the face) interchangeable between the normal cluster and the sr5 cluster?

ISO sr5 gauge cluster. cable driven.

Hi, new here to yotatech. This is great write up and thread. Definitely looking forward to switching my standard cluster to an sr5 version. Ive looked through 4 pick a part yards and have only been able to find guage clusters that are electronically driven. Does anyone have one of the older cable driven ones that they are willing to part with by chance?

^^^ 84-88 is one style. 89-92 is mechanical driven and is another style so you will need to post your year. Since you said yours is not electrically driven, I am assuming you have the 89-92 style truck. 93-94 is electrical driven.

Hello all!
Im in the middle of this swap right now, and my potentimeter is totally not reading the same levels. Initally I had a reading of 9,000ohms. Then I adjusted it a quarter turn, no change. Adjusted it another quarter, and it dropped to 0 ohms. Dialed it back, went back to 9000ohms. Long story short, its either 9000, or 0 ohms. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Greetings YotaTech,
Just got my first Toyota; a 1994 Xtra cab pickup DLX, 22RE, 5 speed. Hit up the junkyard earlier today in search of some things for it, and ran across a 1995 4Runner v6 SR5 automatic. I pulled the gauge cluster in hopes of putting it in my DLX pickup, but surprisingly this 4Runner SR5 cluster is a cable speedometer. Just thought I would post it up on here since I've seen the idea floating around that perhaps the older ones (within the 89-95/6 generation pickups and 4Runners) were cable driven speedos and the later years were the electronic type. My '94 pickup is an electronic speedo.

Not sure if this has been addressed before, but I'm assuming I can't swap out my DLX electronic speedometer into this SR5 cable speedometer cluster housing, right?

Thanks guys, and if I can't use this on my truck, I'd be interested in trading it for an electronic speedo version! Located in Alabama haha

Oil sending switch

I have an 89 22re. It appears my knock sensor, is in the location, under the oil filter, while the oil pressure switch, is to the rear of oil filter, and right beside it. Have u seen this before?

To: Rawwdz: Have you found out what that thing in the middle of your rear cluster guage was? I just picked up one from the salvage yard today and I was wondering the same thing.

91 Cluster Swap

My speedo had been making a racket for years, and finally the speedo stopped working (can hear the cable whipping, but no speed indicated). In anticipation of the ultimate demise, I located an electronic speedo SR5 cluster from a 4Runner with the same SR5/engine/MT, just two years newer than my 91.

Two problems: I discovered that, contrary to statements in other threads, this truck is not equipped with the VSS. Thanks to twistedsymphony for his research. I have ordered the Marlin sender and have the replacement wire installed.

Second problem: With the ingition key on and engine not running, the tach indicates about 3500 RPM. When the engine starts, the tack follows engine speed. The needle is only at zero when power is off.

Has anyone seen this issue and any solutions?

thanks
