digital guage cluster swap
#5
I've got one in mine. I'm actually gonna start looking for a non-digital one after I get some other major problems fixed. I'm interested on if it will directly swap over too. I really hate the digital dash. It's hard to read the tach and extremely hard to read my oil pressure and temperature when the sun is shining directly into the cluster.

why not fabricate a custom gauge set from an oldsmobile cluster? you can get those in almost any junk yard and most of the oldsmobiles have digital clusters (at least every one i've ridden in)

From: Yotatech, because Pirate is too expensive. NorCal.
I had 2 turbo runners. One absolutley sucked in the daylight. The other was OK and great at night. They are hard to read like Boosted said. And from what I've read it is a very hard swap to do. I would not go through the trouble. Its not worth it, I would rather look at the analog one anyways. Just change your bulbs out to LEDs if you want something different and leave it at that. My 2cents.

I don't know if I would like trying to read the digital gauges... I preffer to have a needle to look at... in my eyes and mind I can comprehend it better...
besides, I just swapped in an SR5 cluster, and it's everything I want

Though they were cool in the 80's, digital displays are not particularly well suited to displaying highly dynamic, analog content like RPM's and speed. Yeah, you can get around some of the issues, like rapidly changing digits, by using a bar-graph type display but then you give up the fine resolution you get from a needle moving across a gauge since there are only so many LED's you can put in any given space. Also, the more LED's lit, the brighter the light, which is annoying as well.
You find yourself compromising accuracy, which causes the digits and display to change rapidly, with readability, which means the digital electronics samples at a lesser frequency so the display doesn't change as often, and in turn you find that you're not getting a real-time display of what's going on and are missing information... something easily solved by using analog gauges.
I just want to be able to glance down and see my engine speed, vehicle speed and maybe temps and fuel level and be able to interpret that as quickly as possible, and having to read numbers and think "is that too hot" only distracts me from the task at hand: driving; wheras a needle that points to a particular range gives me the ability to abstract that thought and make a decision based on relationship instead of absolute... "needle is too high, better stop" type of decisions.
