I watched over the guy's shoulder at Pep Boys when he punched it up... it said "Retail: $80, Sell for: $45".

For once, perhaps I should have gone to the stealer for the part.

It was around $50 from the dealership I think. Right now I just don't have an idiot light or gauge hooked up...not good, but until I got the gauge sending unit I just left the wire hanging. Now I've got the unit, and I'm going to run all the wires hopefully this weekend. In the pre-84 trucks, the oil & volt gauges are in a separate cluster, and if your truck didn't come with it from the factory (like mine), then it isn't wired for it, so need to cut off the plug-in's and splice some wires in to get mine working. Will be nice (and smart, finally) to have an oil gauge.

Nothing additional, nothing changed. Pull the old one out, put the new one in.

Bam... Done.

The tach did come from a v6 truck though, so its off. I have to do a mod to
the tach to actually make it read the correct engine speed though. I'll do that
when i get that last amber bulb to go in the dash.

what do you have to do in order to get the tch working?

How do I remove the speedo needle ?? I want to up the mileage on my new cluster cause I don't want to go back in miles and the only way I can see to do that is to remove that darn needle and I just can't.

Just grab the round base with your fingers and gently pull. It's a light press-fit.

I'll swap the sender this weekend and report back, but every indication so far leads me to think that I haven't smoked anything yet.
FWIW, I put it off for a couple of months before I got it done (ended up using a Toyota factory part, stripped the threads on the aftermarket one).

It worked like a champ.

I did try "Gently" pulling and it just won't come off. I was pulling harder than I really wanted to, still nothing.

I guess I'll just pull harder.

Thanks

See:

I have also used a pair of butter knives to lift up the needle on a VW speedo, the key is to lift evenly on both sides of the needle base.

From the 4x4wire post:

"Then I pulled the needles off with a pair of spoons under the base of the needle"

Got it, no heat, but it was the shaft that came out of the gauge !! The plastic needle is still on the splined shaft !!
Just poped off and hit me in the head ... I was actually scared of bending my knives.

I've probably broken it, but IDK, I think all I need to do is glue it all back together !! Gauge still seems to work, there is now a sharp pin like thing sticking just above the surface, the needle shaft was over, or around.
But at least I'm there, Thanks

Geeze ... laugh

I'm now advancing my odometer, still going to take a while, it's at 180,000 miles now and I have to take it up to just over 308,000 ... most people would turn it back !!!

I guess I'm a fool, it's just I put all those 308,000 miles on myself and I just don't want to go back.

I figured if I had used a drill motor to run it up it would have taken over 80 days at 60 MPH 24/7 I would have bruned up my drill motor !!

This is easier ??

Laugh

I'm now able to advance it at over 1 mile a second ( more like a mile every .75 sec. )

Still will take over 26 hours at this rate !!

Laugh, maybe I'll get faster

Not bad for a 4 cly.
