95 4x4 Grinding Noise, Spindle Bushings?
Hi all!
new to yotatech, but have been snooping through the forums for a long time.
anyways, recently got a 2nd gen 4x4 5th v6 and have been slowly fixing things up. I find myself chasing a noise lately and am certain it’s in the front end, but I can’t pin it down exactly. I’m wondering if this is caused by worn or dry brass spindle bushings, I’ve searched multiple forums and found some great write ups, but couldn’t find a video of the “before” sound from the spindle.
In my case is much worse at low speeds and specifically when turning. I’ve checked the CVs and there is no play it sounds like a scraping dust shield, which I’ve checked, as well as the hubs for play. Anyone have this same issue? Is this what a dry spindle bushing sounds like?
Attached is a video of it making the sound.

front axle area noise when turning is a classic wheel bearing failure sound, but i'm not sure that it sounds like that.
so you put the front end on jackstands, and checked for vertical play on the tire? when was the last time that the wheel bearings were serviced?
i don't know about your ifs suspension, but on a solid front axle truck the brass bushings are only in use when the truck is in 4wd, because that's the only time that the axles are turning... the axle rotates inside the brass bushing.
is your '95 like that? aka, it's not a full-time 4wd vehicle, right? the axles shouldn't be turning in street driving?

With toyota's ADD system the half shafts do turn all the time. Manual hubs no. Might be able to get away with just regreaseing the bushings first and see if the noise goes away. They can make a pretty loud noise. Mine did it on those cold winter mornings when the grease was really cold.
there are 2 options for the inner bushings.
1) just replace bushing with stock bushing
2) uses a needle bearing bushing then a shorter length knuckle bearing.
