I think I agree, don't want to waste time and money on fixing this boot if it's not going to hold. I'm going to try to find the best shape OEM one I can.

I used two basic floor jacks just to get it up as high as possible then ratchet straps across the torsion bars to lift mine into place. It was able to swing enough to get the input lined up with the clutch, haha.

That's slick, you've got to work with what you have! This cheapo tranny jack is worth the cost, like $50 at HF. My truck is the perfect height too, so that once tranny jack is lowered all the way, it will roll right out from underneath the frame with the trans sitting on it.
Maybe look for a generic boot at summit or jegs that will fit in the same hole?
Sorry, just saw this, it got sandwiched in there between other posts. I will take a look and see what summit and jegs has, that's not a bad idea.

I'd guess that it's a pretty good seal from the factory, but maybe over time being slipped on and off it has stretched some. I know the tears in mine were blowing a ton of hot air on that road trip to NC. Ray put a piece of insulation under the rubber boot to keep some of the heat from getting up through there, I think I'll do the same, maybe it will help the boot last longer too.
The hunt continues for a boot, for reference, the Toyota part number on the bottom of mine says 58286-89120.
Still been kinda trolling eBay for a good shifter boot, just haven't seen one in the condition I want. In meantime driving truck with a gaping hole there stinks, so I RTVd my boot back together.

I painted the metal plate also. Unfortunately I only had clear RTV, but this is just temporary.
On another note, I received my prize from the Yotatech giveaway, an ARB portable air compressor. Only opened it up so far, but the quality is amazing. Comes with an air hose, blow gun, tire check, compressor and tank all in about fancy hard case. Can't wait to try it out.

or black nylon thread, then go over the seam with contact cement or urethane adhesive. I had fixed lots of things with upholstery grade nylon thread and baseball stitch.
Cory- nice job on the repair. those things are hard to find..RAD4runner's idea of the thread works wonders, use it a lot to repair stuff in the army

Cory- forgot I had this shift boot from the trekker. Dunno what it is from but it is in awesome shape, no rips or anything. If you want it it's yours for $7 Just to cover the flat rate envelope

Thank you Robb, yeah nice that we both got the grand prize. I have to say, I don't own anything else ARB, but there is a reason their stuff is expensive, the build quality out of the box is just impressive to me. I have some air tools, so I'll give it a try this weekend. Thank you for the offer on that shift boot, but I think that's not really what I want. If I'm going to replace mine, I really want the whole piece covering both shifters. Thank you though, very kind of you.

Sewing is a great idea, I had not thought of that. I might see if I can pick the rtv out of it and have a do over.

I'm not a good stitcher, but I might give this a go. I have some kind of personal issue paying $75 for a beat up 30 year old piece of rubber, not sure why. In the meantime, I might try to clean up my repair with the stitching.
After Hurricane Irma my neighbor had a tree go down. He cut the tree up weeks ago, but the stump was still there, so I my truck over there and used the winch to pull the stump out. We dug around the stump to break up the root system and we pried and dug along with the winch to help out out. The winch is a Warn xd9000i, which I recently overhauled. I noticed that when I let off the winch control, the brake would not hold and the stump would fall back in the hole. We managed to get the stump out and bib went home and did some reading on the winch brake. Seems like I did not properly rewind the spring that pushes the brake into the drum, so now I need to take winch apart to fix it.
