All I know about them is from the Factory Service Manual, a few YouTube videos and threads here.
I have been having some performance issues and figured that it couldn't hurt to rebuild the carb. 30 Years is a pretty good life for a carburetor that has never been rebuilt!
I will post how I do everything when I find the time if you are interested. By that time, I should have a pretty good idea of how they work.
I probably get around to it mid to late March.

Not sure how I missed this build. Truck is in far better shape then what you find around here. I like seeing you doing the Pontiac. I like any in depth build. Looks like you have it tore down quite a bit. I will be looking forward to how your builds go.

So today I had a spare minute and pulled the bed on my own. It's resting nicely on a little tilt trailer I have until I'm ready to do metal work on it. Here's a few pics of the half nekked 4x4. I didn't realize how small these trucks really are compared to the F-250.
The brake line inside the rail was brittle. I'm glad the po used this as a farm rig and not for the street.
I think when the clay is scraped off there may only be some light rust.
I think I may run a flat bed while I'm doing the metal work on the bed.
The cross members are surprisingly in relatively good shape. I won't have to use the spares I have.
This is what was left of the failed brake line. It rusted so badly it was the diameter of a pencil lead.

Thanks Terry. It's sounds funny to say it but I think the clay protected it somehow. I try to keep a jet ski trailer around for stuff like this but I'm sold out. The little tilt that could will have to do

Pretty boring update today. I've pulled the brake lines and now begin the task of making new ones. Napa is my only local retailer to have the Japanese metric brake line Union as I am using a two piece to go from the right front frame rail to VSP. Have to wait three day for the union to come in. Maybe tomorrow I will do the front and rear springs.

I helped to restore an 82 and we got some factory replacement springs from a local mom and pop shop. I liked how that truck rode. I had some Old Man Emu on my 85 and they rode harsh. In my opinion OME would be great for rock crawling but not for a daily driver. Also the OME if I am correct give a 3 inch lift. I was eventually going to go with stock springs on the 85 but never got around to it.

Morning Terry. Hope y'all weren't effected by the tornados yesterday. We used to have two real good spring shops here that had less than a day turnaround. Now the closest I have is a hundred miles away. If the pro comps don't work out I will get a set of originals done there.

I don't have first hand info about any bulging. It was recommended by my hot rod friends who use it all the time. The lines I used were AGS CNJ-360 Japanese lines from CarQuest. I bought the 5' sticks and had only 2 or so connectors to lengthen. They have the right size fittings for Toyota, inverted flares

Finished mocking up the brakes today. I found a couple sticks of brake lines at two different Napa's and a coupler. Test drove and brakes are strong. I will need to adjust the rears just à bit. I'm pretty sure I will go with the Nicorr lines if I decide to recon the entire truck. I got to bend one up at the auto parts store and it seems really good. Test drive showed me I need to adjust the carb and check the timing. Maybe tomorrow as I need to adjust the valves as well and change all the fluids before I take it on a short trip.

The truck is running like crap today. When I get to higher rpms (2200+) it just sputters, so I couldn't drive it to the car wash to pressure clean the frame. It idles fine and will Rev in neutral but under a load it just falls on its face. My wife helped me chisel and hose some clay off the frame. Tomorrow I'll take the flap disc to it to clean it up for some por15. I'll post some pics tomorrow
