In car LCD & Computer ??
Okay did some searching found a few things that were older and for the most part people either started this project and stoped for some reason or another.
I would like to see if anyone actualy has any pics of a 7" TFT screen mounted into the dash on a 3rd gen ??.... (searched with no luck online yet)
I wanted to use the new touchscreen I got with a older laptop for NAV and DVD viewing and maybe MP3/WMA but not 100% sure yet, just wanted to see if anyone here actualy was able to fab up a mounting point ??
Okay on the second note anyone got a 3rd gen center dash piece laying around ?? they may want to sell, Like to play around with a few ideas I have floating around my brain.
Oh forgot to mention I did want to keep my current Head unit too

mp3car.com forums...best place for info. There are a quite a few 3rg gen 4Runners and Taco's with exactly what you are trying to accomplish. On this forum though, Adamf did a non-touch version in his '96: http://www.toyotaoffroad.net/afertig/
- but you gotta say bye bye to your HU do it like him. Same with my old 4Runner's setup: http://www.poboytech.net

screw 7"...
why not just get last model iMac and mount it in the dash... you'd have a moving monitor, burner wireless so you could transfer songs from your home computer w/o getting out of your truck and you could even watch DvDs on it. Plus, with all the new wireless "hotspots" these days you'd have internet when you were out on lunch break. You'd have to do some custom dash work and you'd have to lose the pass airbag but damn... thats a good idea... hmmm Wouldn't be cheap but oh so cool. and you'd also have a 15" monitor for Navigation. Then you could have one mapquest window open with the directions and the other window open with your current location like I do with my laptop. too bad my damn garmin only has serial out and macs don't have serial in and it requires a software conversion to usb and it lags a bit. But if you got say an alpine/kenwood etc then they probably have video out so you could do it that way.
That said...
on a more practical level, why not just get an iPaq or something and get the bluetooth GPS thing, then you'd have a touch screen, wireless GPS and mp3 playback. Not to mention wifi... just brainstorming here...
BTW,
amazing runner you have there LI, too bad they are such a pain in the bootie! Otherwise you'd be one RICH RICH man!

Actually the laptop I have has Wifi built in so tranfering mp3 and such or surfing is not a problem and yes I already have a 7" touchscreen and was testign it out this weekend in the truck works fairly well actuall with the GPS Streets and Trips. Now to make it fit in dash is the trick ... Think the next step is get a spare Center dash piece and do soem mocking up for MOD time
I am just trying to reuse what I have.. The in dash radio already has a AUX input for audio from the Laptop too and was working okay when I tested it yesterday. I'll snap a pick of the screen and how it looks temporarly setup for my quick test run yesterday later today.

Can't say for sure if my idea will work till I get another center piece to test and mess around with for fitment.
Here is the link to some pics I took this evening in the driveway..

I figure you might need a good guide of doing what I think you want to do (guessing flush mount the lcd in the dash). I however would give you adivice not to do it. Try this take your screen put it down there and pretend with the angle that it is facing how it would be flush mounted.
1. It will not be easy to see (without a strained neck).
2. You can't change the angle to stop light reflecting really bad off of it.
3. Where can the head unit go?
I've had a computer in my truck for nearly a year now and it's had it's share of issues. Random reboots, software crashes, hardware failures it lead me to never want to have just the computer running the audio system in my truck. If it fails I can always just pop in a cd in the headunit and take my time fixing it.
