2nd Gen. Front Speakers
Hey everybody,
looking for a weekend project, already planning on attempting the (eek!) fuel filter thanks to the forum write up, but id also like to increase the volume of
my Yanni records....
ha.
anyway after doing some searching around on the forum
ive found some good info on the subject but i still have some questions
for anyone that has installed speakers in the door of a second gen 4runner.
I like Corey's set up but I think Id prefer to just put the speakers right in the door with spacers and the stock speaker grills.
I'm wondering if any of you that have done this have any tips or pictures?
Will I need to fashion some sort of bracket or will the spacer be enough?
Ive also thought of checking the junkyard for an extra set of kick pannels and cutting some speaker holes in them, but im not sure how i would go about supporting the speaker...tips on this are also helpfull.
many thanks.

This is what I made at last summer:
I made about 1 cm (½") plywood spacer between speaker (5.25") and kick panel and coated them by gray felt. There is not much space between window frame and panel, maybe 4-5 cm (<2"). I screwed screws (x4) through the spacer and panel to the door plate. The location of the speaker is what is it (quite low) because of the door opening limit rain (or what is it, I don´t know the name ) . I managed to thread wires through the rubber between door and frame, it was painful/difficult (there is 23 wire if I remember right).
Maybe this could help to compose the image of situation:
I have treble speakers on A-pillars also.

Nice work, Matti. I did something similar, but mine is more ghetto. I managed to barely fit a pair of Infinity Kappa 6.5" speakers in the same location you have yours, but I didn't need a spacer. In retrospect, I should have done a spacer like yours since my door panel doesn't quite sit flush into the door. I also relocated my map pocket like shown in Corey's write-up. It made installation easier. Ditto on the PITA threading the speaker wire, but it's worth the time. I initially just pulled back the rubber gasket and fed it through hole, but within a month the metal from the door frame had worn through the cable and I had to do it over. I'll post some pics when I get a chance -- the damn thing is in the shop again so I won't have it back until Friday.
My advice -- it's entirely possible to slam a set of 6.5" speakers in the door, but be sure you get the most shallow speakers in that size that you can find. And then take the time to finish it right.

wow, odd... im doing the exact same thing today... ill post some pictures of the boxes i built. they are about 14 inches long (about the length of the map pocket), 3 inches thick (big enough for a 6 1/2 with no need to actually cut the door) and vary in height... ill post some pictures once i actually get the speakers and everything. im gonna go with the blaupunkt components from crutchfield. im really strapped for cash so they are the best bet for now. gonna paint them (or the grilles) black so they look regular, hah.
