I spent the last couple days working on the trailer and got a bunch of progress done on the thing! :D

Everything is painted, installed all new wiring, cleaned out the tailights and got the safty chains installed. I also got the trucks trailer wiring installed along with a bunch of other details. I'm still waiting for the new spare trailer tire to show up, so the spare is not on the back of the camper.

Damn.......I can remember those curtains. :rockin: Does that mean I'm OLD!! Looks like a well spent $50 on your part. Great work......

DIRTCO 07-11-2009 06:02 PM

I knew the front of the camper was going to get beat up pretty bad (35's + no mud flaps + dirt roads), so I used bedliner on the whole front of the thing. This should be harder to chip and easier to touch up. After getting the front painted it seemed a little "blah", so I found an old Metallica stencil I had and spiced it up a little. I also added a couple pin stripes to the frame rails.

This is why you replace old wiring, not try to save it. Both of these spots were inside the frame rail and I knew nothing about them until I gutted it.

Thanks guys! I was at the right place at the right time, and it all worked out. When I first got the thing I kind of felt bad that the guy only wanted $50 for it ,but it's okay. I'm pretty sure that most of the other people that called about it would have gutted it and used it for a utility trailer. At least now it's fixed up and will get used for what it was bought for. Maybe when it's all done I'll call the guy and see if he wants to check it out. :D

The best part has been that it's been a lot of fun, without a ton of work. I've been getting burnt out on working on my truck, so it gave me a break from that and I got to do something differant.

I'm going to set it up this weekend to work on the interior, batch some of the canvas and get it all packed up. I'll take some pictures. It's first trip will be next weekend to the CO4RJ!

:camp2::fire2:

I bet your right, but I'm going to keep it. :D There's not very much info on the internet about these, but from what I have found they were the best in their time period. I'm really amazed at how well it's held up for being 45 years old.

That was my thing, I loved camping but it was a PITA. Now everything will be in the trailer and when I want to get away for a night or a weekend, I'm set!

DieselGuy 07-25-2009 06:05 PM

that is freekin cool ! good to see someone putting a classic back to work instead of gutting it out for a utility.

DIRTCO 08-05-2009 05:20 PM

I know a couple people were asking for pictures of the inside. So here you go...

I set up the camper and worked on the inside a bit. I had to replace the front section of canvas (I forgot to take pictures of the repair), along with some missing snaps and repair a couple small tears. I also added a rug to cover the old carpet, along with some other details.

Here's how it looks all folded out, not bad for 45 years old :)

86Toyrunna 08-06-2009 07:14 PM

dude thats awesome. that sure beats setting up a tent and air beds or mats, and camp table and other crap. plus just the whole saving cargo room in the runner would be worth it. thats the only thing that bugs me is that by the time i get the tent sleeping bags and cooler in the back of my runner its full, so then i got to pack stuff in the rear seat and hope it dont piss off the dog to much (he has claimed the rear seat lol). i may have to keep an eye out for something like this.

That's the main reason I got it, by the time I get everything loaded in the 4Runner I can't see out the back window and the thing is riding on the bumpstops. I can keep 90% of the camping stuff in the trailer and when I want to camp all I have to do is hook up the trailer, pack my crap and some food and run by the beer store.

 That's great! I took it to the CO4RJ a few weeks ago and it worked great! We camped for two days and three nights, it was very comfortable and a hell of a lot better than a tent. I wanted to take some pictures but it was getting dark as we were setting up camp and both days were long, late days on the trail. I plan on taking it out again in the next week or two, so I'll take some pictures then. :)

BigBluePile 08-18-2009 06:44 PM

Awesome, glad to hear it worked great!

Jager 08-20-2009 06:39 AM

That thing makes me want to go camping!! Hows your runner tow it? I think it might make mine dog down, but Im also in need of a rebuild!

Lumpy 08-20-2009 07:02 AM

That is a sweet setup!!! A rival of Corey's i see!!! :jk:

What I really like about it is that it's simple. Beds and a table what more do you need. That helps keeping it lite. You def. had a great find and I think you should call the chap you got it from so he can check it out.

I'm thinking I need one now!!! :D

crafthorse 08-20-2009 04:04 PM

It is sweet! You had an awesome platform to start with for being 45 years old. Enjoy, its nice!

matt1992 04-01-2012 08:31 AM

lol you haulin' that on your bumper receiver?

loos nut 04-01-2012 10:17 AM

ChefYota4x4 04-01-2012 10:42 AM

VERY B.A.! Great job on the details, man! Between you and IRAB/IAN, .... I'm REALLY gonna get an itch to find one of these now! lol. I see em in L.A., even older ones, like yours, but they're either totally defunct or the guy/gal is asking WAY too much, ya know?

GREAT project, and SICK RIG!!!

Thanks guys! The Chief was too cool :), but a little big for the trails I wanted to run with it. I sold it a couple years ago (and the 4Runner a year ago) and I've been building a new trailer and a 3rd Gen 4Runner to tow it with. Both builds can be found at the bottom of this post.

ChefYota4x4 04-02-2012 11:30 PM

HOLY CRAPOLI! hahahaha... Just laughed out loud at just how badly I missed the 'last post of the OP!' hehehe....

I'll check em out, Dirtco:great:
