1985 4runner SR5

Last updated 2008-03-26

1985 Toyota 4runner SR5
209,702 miles on 22RE 4 cylinder 5-speed manual transmission.

Today I bought a 1st generation '85 4runner. It is black with grey interior. The front fenders are rusted out, lower front bumper trim is barely hanging on, doors are a little rusty, driver's door jamb needs some new metal, quarters are in need of some minor repair, and the tail gate is rusty as heck. the rear bumper was all messed up from some one pulling the previous owner out of a mud pit and bending it out and up. The interior has some of the panels removed but everything is there. I lifted up the carpet on the driver's side and it's a little orange under there, i'll dig deeper in a little bit. It also has some ugly nerf bars, those will be going soon. When i was under the vehicle checking how the nerf bars were attached i noticed the front passenger side wheel well and floor board were a little rusty and after looking closer i found some fiberglass repair and the dreaded spray foam! the previous owner said he had some repairs done to it about 10 years ago with a new paint job, obviously they just slathered some quick fix on it and painted since it looks a bit rotted out. the frame seems to be solid and it runs well with a little burning oil.

Future Plans:

-Replace front fenders (something decent until i can get fiberglass)
-Paint flaking chrome grille flat black
-Patch rusted areas on rear quarter panels
-Replace tailgate
-Thoroughly clean interior and inspect floor boards
-Put interior panels back in
-Replace front and rear bumpers with OEM or tube bumpers
-Replace doors with rust free and put tube doors on in summer
-Sand down exterior and paint flat ARMY GREEN
-Possibly put a White star on the hood and maybe rear quarter panels
-Suspension will need some work later. still has original shocks and leaf springs, when it comes time for replacement i'll get a lift kit from WabFab
-Tune up engine for daily driver use. no big plans yet, i guess when something major happens i'll do a rebuild on the engine, but it's just fine for now

that's all for now!

i brought the 4runner home today and got right to work. working on it in the street is not optimal for getting things done but that's what i have to do for now.

the first thing i did was remove those ugly rusted nerf bars. they were mounted kind of weird. the front was bolted with the stock bolts holding on one of the cross members. the rear bolt was the same as one of the bolts holding the rear leaf springs.

next, that bent and twisted rear bumper had to go. four bolts and a couple kicks and it was GONE! i saved the end caps in case i get a replacement OEM style bumper and i also saved the brackets.

it was getting dark after those two fixes and it was time to pack up and move inside.

Fitted the new front fenders on, now i just need to take them off again and fix the tiny bit of surface rust and slather on some POR15 and then prime and paint them.

Took off the rear bumper extensions that run along the quarter panels in the rear. noticed some more rust that needs fixing

Started painting the chrome trim on the tail lights, next i have to do the same for the corner lights up front. i've got some grey headlight surrounds for the front grille on their way, they'll get a shot of flat black too. and i'm going to look for a new grille that's black or grey that would take some flat black paint better than the peeling chrome grille i have now. if i don't find one, i'll just have to make due with the chrome and try painting that.

i'm slowly getting the new tail gate ready for paint. i'm not sure if i want to completely disassemble it for paint or just tape off and sand the best i can. it's blue right now, i need to treat a couple areas with the POR15, then it's getting a couple coats of primer and then the OD green to match the rest.

i'm picking up the doors next weekend. they are blue as well and will need the same prep and paint as the tail gate. these doors have manual windows and the vent window on it instead of the solid power windows i have now; should work a lot better IMO.
