winch for 3rd gen pickup

need a little help deciding on a winch. i have a 94 short bed pickup, weight...?? 3500..??
i kind of would like to keep the weight down on the front of the vehicle. i like the new ramsey 6000lb, the one that comes setup with synthetic line, only 35ft though. price on that is $800. is a 6000 pound winch enough for my truck?
the other option is a 9000lb warn from ebay for $750. i imagine that it is pretty heavy though. the ramsey is only like 60 pounds and supose to be real tough.
any thoughts?
thanks.

Agreed on the M8000 if you shop hard. I bought a 5.5hp 9000 lb chinese copy of the M8000 and I'm happy with it so far - but I paid $365. One note - those Ramsey electrics are the same winches sold by Harbo Freight - el cheapo. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=40764 They may work just fine - but they should not cost the same as the good stuff. I've seen the REP8000 for $299 many times - for $900 you can buy a Warn retail! I don't think the 6000 weighs less anyway, or not much less, so why do it?

RE: power - I had a Warn M6000 for 14 years on my 85 Runner and used it heavily. Never needed more winch, but could have sure used more battery sometimes! No worries.

i agree with byron4, remember this, most of the time you will be winching out "others" not yourself, not everyone has a light truck. thats the winch i got, its my first winch, so i cant compare it to other winchs, but i love it, the syn. line is soooo light.

heres a better pic

From what I understand about the Harbor Freight winches is that they are a identical to the Ramsey 8000, except for the fact that the contact casing on the Harbor Freight one is made of plastic. I have one and am thinking of putting it on my 4runner, since is was free. They work fine, but you can't keep it under a constant load. You have to winch, stop, winch, stop and so on.

You're welcome for putting your thread into an area where you're going to get answers from the people who know about off roading rather than from every web wheeler who thinks they know about off roading. Do you have a problem with the rules here? There is a reason for them and you are not exempt from them.

8000lb winches are typically the minimum for toyotas. 6000lbs ain't going to cut it. There is a reason nobody has mentioned a 6000lb winch. Synthetic is safer than steel and is the main reason for going with it, but pricey.

no problem with the rules. i just thought i had a pickup/4runner related question, not a general winch question.

Here's a good article on winch safety and how to calculate winch load.

Not to hijack the thread, but do you think one of these Harbor Freight winches is worth the money? I've never had a winch but I'm getting more into wheeling and would like a winch but don't have a lot to spend especally after I get a winch bumper.

ok, remember you get what you pay for.

that 6000 winch is NOT a good idea on your truck.

the harbor freight winches are like everything else they sell, crap

99.9% of the people on this board need to look at no less than the m8000 mentioned earlier in this thread.

Anywhere where the wires can still reach or get longer wires...

I'm looking at the Warn 9.0Rc for the buggy but I haven't seen pricing on it. I like the size and weight and the fact that it comes with sythetic and an aluminum hawse fairlead...
