What gears for 36's with v6?

i was thinkin either 4.88's or 5.29's. Im kinda leaning towards the 4.88s but cuz the 5.29s seem kinda low but i dont know. Does anyone have experience with these gears and 36's or 35's an v6?, if so any input would be greatly appreciated.

If it is the 3.4, 5.29's.

If it is the 3.0 DEFINATELY 5.29's. Some might even run a higher ratio but more expiereinced minds will prevail in this topic.

I have the 3.4 engine with 4.88's and 35" tires. I am very happy with the combination. I do mostly highway driving, but the setup has never let me down offroad, either.

You could get by with 4.88s if you do mostly highway driving. It will be down on power but decent on gas mileage. Strongly recommend 5.29s though. Don't go with more than that! Mine turns 3000rpm at 65-67ish, that's high enough. Also the higher (numerically) ratios are very weak.

Good Information

Actually that's what happens when there is not enough preload on the carrier bearings. Using 90-100 ft/lb's of preload keeps the ring gear from being able to deflect and break things. When the locker was installed they probably pulled the carrier and replaced it with the Detroit but probably went a little light on the carrier bearing preload. Or maybe they didn't get the carrier bearings seated 100% and they seated them selves during use and lost preload. Check out ZUK's Website for everything you wanted to know about gear installs. After reading through a few installs you will see the importance of carrier bearing preload (usually called CBPL). With Quality 4.88's (Yukon is good stuff) broke in for over a year you should be breaking axles before gear sets but how do you prove the mech wrong unless you inspect it yourself.

edit... Yeah I would opt for 5.29's as well with anything over a 35"

Thanks Ganoid for the kind words.

dmoney19---thumbs up on 529 with 36" heavy meats. Your 3.4 will love you for it....you have an auto right? That's even better as the DEEP OD will pretty much let you cruise at whatever speed you want. Get some of those "cryo'd only" 529 Yukon gears from Bobby Long for an even better edge. Bobby sells the heated treated/cryo ones normally....you don't want those....you want the "cryo only" ones.

A lot has been said on many of these bulletin boards about 529 and 571 pinions....and how small they are....and how they are so weak. I do pro installs and also research and read from pro sources....and believe me, those are not bulletin boards ....Forget about HELIX ANGLES as related to the pinion is stronger than the hypoid ring gear....forget about CONTACT RATIO being the same whether its a 410 or 571 ratio. Just get some healthy CBPL in there....hell, don't be afraid to use over 100 ft/lbs.

here's a couple of good reads.....need Adobe to open some of these.....
