I know this question is retarted... and I could just go to my FSM in my truck and look. But I'll ask anyway. My 91 Runner v6 has a 7.5" up front and this locker will work right? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...154107088&rd=1 Anyone know anywhere cheaper than this? Thanks... its late and I want to order this thing tonight.

EDIT: Allright... I'll look in my FSM tomorrow, I've got work in 5 hours. If you know anywhere that sells these for cheaper than the one on ebay, please post it or PM it to me. Thanks everyone.

it'll work in the front of any 86-95 with factory IFS diff. it'll work fine with yours. the price is pretty good to. i bought my lockright from a local retailer and it was quite a bit more than $240.

I figure it's better to reopen a thread over having a million on the same topic.

I've read through the entire thread and my question is since the start of this thread has any significant advancement been made on these?

I've got a DD that I want for overlanding and wheeling. I'm not going to be a hardcore jumper or rock crawler yet so I just want a good solid option that will not break the bank. These things don't appear to be so expensive that an upgrade to an ARB will not make me too upset. Especially as I could get a little money back selling it used.

I live up near the arctic so I will be in snow and ice A LOT. How bad are they really? My missus is Aussie and not used to snow. Should I never let her touch the truck in winter months if I go this route?

I'd love some current opinions.

I have not ruled out an air locker at this point. I'm just not sure yet if I'll not be selling my 2nd Gen to go after a 3rd Gen 4Runner. 4x4's sell for a good price North of 60 and I can actually get most of my money back to dump into my next 4Runner not so much if I go air. This saves a 3.4 swap if I get one.

I was hoping for a bit more than that. Examples of why one brand over another.

Cost, if a mechanical is so close to the cost of an air locker why not just spend the small extra?

Has there been any advancement in mechanical lockers to eliminate chirping and the ass end kicking out?

How are some lockers better than others for a DD or on ice and snow.

I know computers somewhat for example; I can give a fanboi response like get an invidia they pwn or I can say they have great driver support and are fast. If you want value for money but still have a great upper mid range card that plays all the latest games AMD cards are a good purchase while not breaking the bank buying a name.

I do appreciate the replies but would love more information from guys with a 5,279 post count like yours sschaefer who know more than me. I'm pretty much less than rookie and depend on your advice to make sure my money is spent well and the info to back up my purchase for peace of mind. It also gives me ammo with the missus so I don't get cut off for the next year for wasting hard earned cash.

There is no substitute for a selectable locker. They are NOT a few bucks more you are looking at $550 versus $1200 as well as a more expensive install for the ARB.

The Lock Right and Aussie Locker that install in the stock Toyota carrier will over time destroy the carrier, they stretch it and make the hole the pins slide through oval shaped, resulting in the breakage of the pins used in the these units.

see www.gearinstalls.com for this damage.

The Detroit is the same locker it always was, the Military put them in the M1008 CUCV in the early 80's. The locker replaces the carrier and it will not have any issues except for the clunking and bucking over it's entire life.

I have a rock buggy with an ARB front and Detroit Rear, I have an 1990 Pickup with an ARB front and E-Locker Rear. I have a 1984 with an ARB front and Detroit rear. I have an 1986 Military M1008 with an ARB front and Detroit Rear.

I owned an Lock Right in a 1992 Toyota pickup and my personal experience was it was horrid. I do no have any issues with the Detroit's in the vehicles I own.

Save your money and buy an ARB nothing compares. Everything else is a compromise. Next time please do not insult me.

I have found ARB lockers for only $200 more than a Detroit Locker. When I have to regear front and back which is going to cost over $1000 before tax and shipping a $200 difference is not all that much. This is not counting of course the air compressor I would need but I want one anyway and I don't have to sell it with the truck.

I'm going to get a friend that knows what he's doing to help me. I have found I will save a small fortune if I learn to do this myself. The guy who will supervise and provide tools builds those big competition mud trucks and I trust him. Hell if it blows up I save so much between buying a complete third I can buy all the gears again and still come out ahead! Plus practice makes perfect.

I didn't mean to insult you. If you reread my last paragraph I complimented you. I know you know more than me so I needed to point out a 3 word line is a bad fanboi response so you would share what you know.

I have all kinds of respect for you and your knowledge so I am sorry you took it as an insult but I had to push you to get what was a fantastic answer in the end that I needed. Hell when you describe that carrier damage I don't even know what you mean so I am googling in other tabs trying to learn what you are on about.

I understand your compromise bit but I also feel I perhaps need to for now should I decide to sell. If I then keep it I can always rip out the best of the compromise and get an air locker like a Zip or an ARB.

Can anyone tell me if the ring gear needs to be removed in order to install a Lock-Rite or can it be left on? Thanks
