I want bigger tires.
I want to go to 35s. If I regear to say 4.88s, will I still have a reliable truck with nearly the same economy? What else will I need to provide to run 35s, besides the lift. Does anybody in dallas have 35s with a 22re pushing them?

which tires are those?
i wish you had posted this a week or so back - i'm in the area and had some 35s in the garage already mounted on wheels - i would've been more than happy to let you try them out to see how your 22re did with them!
in any case - good luck

Looks like Swamper TSL bias plies. Horrible things on the road. Bias plys will make it steer funny - been there. TSL bias plies will shake your fillings out.
With a 22RE 4.88s would be okay, but 5:29s would be better. Even so, you are probably going to lose a bit of economy, that's a lot of increased frontal area and rolling resistance to overcome. Brakes will be a bit less effective, and brake life will be shorter too by a little.

I was under the impression that 5:29 gears were prone to breaking while offroading. I want every mod I do to be a strong foundation for the future, so I donno. I wouldn't mind the lack of giddy-up. I'm pretty used to the truck being slow. Is the reason to go with 5:29 for quickness? This truck is no street queen, so would 4:88 be better then?

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.
Economy, 35's, Swampers and offroad do not go together. If you want anything resembling gas mileage, stick to radial wheeling tires. About the only thing bigger and heavier than a bias TSL is a Bogger.

In any case, good luck with the tire decision.

I have 35/12.50/15s on 15x8 rims w/ a 22RE 5 spd with 4.88s and it runs just fine in all 5 gears, plenty of gitty up and go and I get 18-20 mph to boot.

No fighting guys.
I wish that I could "sample" the gears before I put them in. I probably won't be getting them soon, I'm just trying to plan it out. So if anybody in DFW has a regeared a 4 banger, I would love to ride in it to see what it's like. Let me know Dallas folks!

I'm not gonna rehash the old 5.29 vs. 4.88 great debate with you as it has been beat to death, but I've got 4.88s and they are MORE than fine w/ 35s...plenty of power...check out what Pirate has to say about the comparison.
FYI, I've only had my 1st gen since November, so less than 6 months...

Agreed, people need to know what they are talking about before they talk about it. Not trying to be harsh or anything, but if you gonna try to help someone out, make your you know what your doing.

Up here in Denver, I would go 5.29 for 35s. I have 4.88s today and 35s with the v6. I can pull the flats at 80mph no problem, but slight grade = 4th gear.
I get about 18mpg too. Basically, you can't use 5th until you get above 70. Just too low on the power curve with the 4.88s. With the even higher RPM for peak torque on the 4 cyl, I would go 5.29s for 35s for sure.
There is a continental shortage of high pinion 5.29 gears right now. I'll let you know good or bad when I get the 5.29s built and installed. I'm sure I'll like them better than the 4.88s for the 35+ tires I'm running these days.

In Colorado, there are lots of highways, lots of grades and lots of 35's.
Gear it deep. You will likely get bigger tires later.
I have 5.29's with 33's and twice the power of most of those soda bottles. Yes I know how they perform for 60 miles each way to work, on the highway cruising.

I eventually want to get 35's and I eventually want to move to colorado. So now I eventually want to get 5.29's. Hey fly with the 33's, about how fast can you go on the highway under 3000 rpms?

I dont have any personal experience with different gears.
However, just thinking how everytime I get something on my truck, I want another thing.... Id just get the 5.29's because you WILL most likely want bigger tires later on.
You dont wanna pay for regearing twice. I can't even afford to regear one axle.

I have an 86 P/U with a modified 22r with 35s and 5.29s. It brings the ratio back closest to stock. My truck is a trail truck but I do drive it to all trails and it runs through the gears great and 5th is useable but not on most hills. Also with the 5.29s you will get a lower overall gear ratio, combine that with dual cases and its awesome. Yes there has been talk about 5.29s being weaker than the 4.88s..but i'll be surprised if you break a set. Once you get 35s...you'll just want to go bigger and running 36-37s with 5.29s still works great.

as a side note...I wouldnt get the Swamper TSL bias plys if you drive even occassionally on the street, if u just drive to trails they MIGHT be okay...but I would stick with something more along the lines of a MTR, X-terrain or if you want something more aggressive maybe look at the Radial Iroks (they will wear faster than the first two mentioned).

As far as gears, if it is mainly for trail, definitely get 5.29's. I like my 4.88's on 33's for street, but offroad I think a little lower wopuld be nice.
