Hi. I just purchased a 2002 4runner sport edition. I'm so excited I can barely stand it. I just added some custom husky mats, got the a/c fixed at the stealership(it was a must, I live in Atlanta) and added a navi/dvd head unit. Now comes the fun stuff. I want to remove the running boards get some bigger tires, lift it, and add either a bull or brush guard to the front. BTW I just ordered a load warrior with extension which should be here Friday, can't wait. Can you guys point me in the right direction on this stuff. I've looked around but I'm not the most mechanical of fellows(want to learn though). What is the easiest, safest way to lift this thing. It looks so soccer-mom-ish sitting in the driveway. Any help would be really appreciated.

i have the same truck - 2002 4runner sport edition.

the best thing you can do to research lifts for a 3rd gen 4runner is search, esp this board. here are some keywords: revtek, spacers, OME, SAWs, coilovers. here's page that reviews some various lift setups: http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/4Runner/tech/suspension/

i started out with some 2.5" cornfed suspension spacers in front (http://cornfedsuspension.com/) and downey coils with bilstein shocks in the rear. now i have donahoe coilovers in front with 1994 land cruiser front coils (well, soon anyway) and OME shocks in the rear.

then, aside from suspension lifts, there's the world of body lifts. the place to go to for that is 4Crawler Off-Road (http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/ForSale/BodyLiftKit.shtml).

the kind of lift you ought to get depends on how you're really gonna use your rig and how much you're willing to spend.


i'm curious what kinda nav unit you put in yours....how do you like it? i'm liking some eclipse products.

I bought the Pioneer Avic-N2. The navigation can't be beat. But, it has some limitations. If your interested in running the DVD player while driving so the passenger can view a movie it currently can't be done. It has a parking brake sensor(easy to override)a speed sensor(just don't bother hooking it up), but the real problem is the built in gyro. It requires a hack in the software to override it and currently there isn't one floating around. The unit itself is pretty nice thought. It has touch screen which is really handy. I bought the optional voice control system, and ipod adapter which allows you to control everything by voice, headunit or remote. I have another question. How high can I get my runner with just suspension lifts and larger tires only. The only reason I ask, because the body lift seems to be the most invasive. Don't you have to modify a bunch of different things when you do a body lift.

Did you read all the tons of information about body lifts on 4Crawlers website?
A 1" BL is ideal- Combine that with a suspension lift and you''ll be set. Many people would not recommend anything taller, modifications usally only have to be done with 2"+ body lifts.

 

You guys are the best. I'll be completely honest. This has always been one of those things for me where I know what I want in my head just don't know how to get it done. There was a guy in the town I live in who had a runner about six years ago that was just the best. It was burgundy, big tires, lifted high, and always covered in mud. I would see him in the morning on the way to work and say, that guy must be having alot more fun than me. I don't get to go play in the mud as much as I use to with friends, just want to have a vehicle that can do it when I'm ready to. I also like the idea of having something that looks big and tough yet functional. I look at my ride out the window sometimes and think it looks a little soccer-mommish and that gets under my skin a bit too.

 

Awesome sentence man. I've always thought the same when I see runner's humming down the interstates with HOT moms driving. The two best hot mom vehicles: runner's and durangos. seriously though: good luck w/ your runner. People like you may beable to save those soccer mom vehicles from people like me stereotyping them
....oh and before someone flames....yes I know there are tons of runners that would straight spank my taco all over the place!
