e locker in 2nd gen?
i was just thinking if it is possible to get a e locker like the ones that come stock on some 3rd gen runners and put it on a 3nd gen runner? would it even be worth the hassle if it was possible?

Ya know, I'm not sure. I've probably read that article 10 times and I've just assumed it was for a 2nd Gen. I think he is retrofitting the elocker to the std. 8" V6 diff. which is what we have(?) I'm not sure though.

Many have done this.
Matt & Paddlenbike have both retrofitted the E locker into the older axles.
Check out Ken's (Paddlenbike) home page here.

Look for the write-up.
His rear end is the same as the 2nd gen 4Runners.

Not sure on the labor. I think I read somewhere you can get the 3rd mem from Toyota with 4.30's for $750?? Since you only would have the housing mods to worry about, I'd guess another $200-300?

e locker in 2nd generation
this is toyota parts dude they put a e locker factory in 94-95 4 runners. it's a rare option. it's the old style 3rd member so it'll fit in all the 95 and older 8 inch rear trucks and 4 runners. thought i'd let you know that would be a real easy swap.

An 8" Toy housing is an 8" Toy housing is an 8" Toy housing, period.
It should be just like adding it to a 3rd gen.
Has anyone priced a complete e-locker swap with housing mods along wiring parts and installation? It makes sense to me if you have 4.30's to get an e-locker because those are common, but what about 4.56's and 4.88's?
Tell me more about the 2nd gen factory locker? I have never heard anyone mention this before and it really intrigues me.

2nd gen e locker
this is jason i heard about it in peterson's 4 whell and offroad. the center section is bolts up the same in 4x4 toyotas from 79-95. some body should check with toyota dealer for part numbers. is peterson's they put int in the rear of a 85 solid axle truck they tried to put it in the friont but it would not fit actuator would hit leaf springs. it was about a year or two ago i heard about it. if i had one it would be in my 81 4x4 i use for a daily driver lol if i remember allprooffroad or one of those toyota specailty places told them about it they said in the article.

The e-locker was never available on a 2nd gen 4Runner. The only possible combination of axle codes are (a) 2-pinion open (4 cyl), (b) 4-pinion open (turbo/V6) and (c) 2 pinion, OEM Limited Slip. Option (c) was never offered in the U.S.
A Toyota 8" is a Toyota 8". Be it a 1979 diff or a 2002 4Runner. Keep in mind that the Tacomas *without* the e-locker use the 8.4".
The only variability is housing depth. The 4 cylinder housings are not as deep as the V6 ones and you will have to dent the back of the housing to accomodate an e-locker. My truck was the first V6 to get an e-locker and there was plenty of clearance between the "problem bolt" and the back of the housing.

No, it's not a direct bolt-in unless the vehicle already has an e-locker, in which case.... ya. All the thirdmember (4cyl & V6) bolt patterns are the same from the first hilux up to the current 8" thirds (note some new rigs are now using a larger ring gear), and the e-locker replaces 3 studs on one side with 4 in different locations as well as a large notch to clear the locking mechanism. It's not that hard to do though, a little grinding, welding, drilling, and tapping.
Basically you gotta make this:
look like this:
[pre hole drilling and tapping but you get the idea]
More pics here, writeup on the way if AOR ever gets my shock brackets to me...

i never knew about the bolt holes being different my bad. i dont remember them saying anything about that. what about the idea of swapping the whole rear with e locker out of a tacoma. you get the stronger ring and pinoin. you would just have to make up some coil spring perches and track arm mounts.
