does a snatch block actually increase your winch capacitie?
my warn m8000 has 80 feet of cable so say in stuck 35 feet from a tree and run a snatch block from winch to tree and back to truck. I will have all my cable out. will i actually have close to 16000 pounds of pulling. Or am i understanding this theory wrong and a snatch block for closer pulls just to get more cable off the drum?

Check out the Warn Winch site, they have a complete section on Winching Techniques. http://www.warn.com/corporate/images...PN62885-A2.pdf Also, make sure the snatch block your using "matchs" the cable size your running on your winch. Think Safety. There was a guy killed a couple of years ago by NOT using the "proper" procedure.

You are effectively giving yourself a 2:1 mechanical advantage. While your winch reels in wire pulling you, the snatch block is also pulls your truck. So on your 8000lb first layer, if you used a snatch block, you would have 16,000 lb pull, yes.

I've heard that you shouldn't use a snatch block that's been used on steel cable because of gouges in the pulley could abrade the synthetic line. Otherwise, I don't see a problem.

As for half the line speed...seems as though that would be the case but it isn't exactly so. This is because line speed increases as the load decreases.
If we are talking an 8K# rated winch pulling an 8K# load--think very, very slow. Then run a snatch block and cut the load in half. Speed will more than double BUT twice as much rope has to be pulled in to move the same distance. With my HS9500 I have observed actually faster pulls with the snatch block since I have blazing line speed with a lighter load.
This is also easier on your battery and charging system.
I use a snatch block for virtually every pull. The other advantage is that it gets a bunch of rope off of the drum. This also increases the mechanical advantage and overall efficiency of the winch.

OK - that makes more sense. I need to get a new snatch block anyways ... I just noticed mine is for 1/4" :pat:

And keep in mind that you can keep adding snatch blocks for additional tug. One will double, two will triple, etc... (but like TC said, you're cutting your line speed in half as well, once for each block used). You can add as many as you want as long as you have line to thread through them and a place to attach the blocks to your rig.
