Coilover Swap to Replace Tortions on 91 4x4
Hello everyone, I'm new to this site and I have been doing research for years on long travel and such, and I know every thing that I need to go into it. Fabrication is not a problem. But I'm trying to cut a corner for my daily driver which is a 91 Extended Cab Pickup 4x4 5 speed. Basically I need to do one thing:
I want to eliminate the tortion bars and replace them with coilovers.
I have scoured the web looking for a simple solution and the only thing I've really found is Total Chaos. Yes I would love to have TC long travel. Unfortunately I don't have 5 grand. What I want to know is have any of you done this? I read all the time about SAS but I like my a arms, I'm not really that into crawling. Yes, I crawl around a little from time to time, but I want more of a redneck trophy truck. So here is a list of questions.
1. Can I use upper control arm (uca) and a arms off of a Tacoma and if so what year?
2. Can I use the coilovers off a Tacoma prerunner or 4x4? (I assume I can off the older years because the truck is relatively the same weight, but I really don't want to go off my assumptions.)
If that doesn't work:
3. Has anyone removed their tortions and fabbed up mounts for coilovers with their stock a arms and ucas? (The only thing I could think going wrong with that would be weakness in the area where the shock would mount to the a arm, or not having enough space to fit a cool though the uca.)
4. If number 3 is not plausible, if I fabbed new ucas, could I use the stock a arm and strengthen it to support the stress of a coil slamming down on it going though bumps?
Thank you all for looking, please tell me whatever you got, seriously anything on this subject is appreciated! 🇺🇸

I have done this exact thing to a T100 with 4runner coilovers. Fabbed a shock tube with the coil bucket mounts to the frame. Clearanced the UCA.
the 31x10.5 rubbed on the coilover at full lock. added new mounts to the LCA. It was a solution for a truck with broken torsion bar mounts.
Yes it can be done, no it's not really worth the effort.
No you can't use tacoma parts on the 91 pickup, they are the wrong mounts, wrong geometry, wrong ball joints etc...

if you really want a coilover, fab a new UCA with the same stock geometry, use the stock ball joint and stock mounting points. put a 2.5" aftermarket coilover through the UCA. Going to work way better.
