31's or 32's

This question is actually for a friend of mine.
He has a 93 4runner withe the 4cyl and a stick shift and he's thinking about upgrading the tires to bfg m/t's. The question is will 32x11.5x15's slow down the runner alot more than 31x11.5x15's?

if hes keeping the stock gears they will be worse, more mass to spin.. however they will allow a higher top speed but have less available torque....

True this will give a higher top speed with 32s...if he can trun them to get to that speed. But the main importance for his truck will be accel and I don't think it would be that bad but he will notice the diff

whats the gearing on it? i know for my 3.0 with 4.88's stock, moving up to 32's didn't really make much of a difference in terms of power, but i'm not sure with the 22RE

it will have a notieable loss in power from the get go.... it isnt going to be anything crazy like a 10 mpg deficit, but it will be something

Do you mean 10 hp? Because except for a few more revs launching he'll probably end up with better fuel economy if he does alot of cruising

no i mean there will be power loss and loss of mileage, yeah the mileage thing might level itself off, but initially its going to take more power to get up to speed and its more weight to lug around....

22RE; i went from 31's to 33s stop gearing, and it was painfull...its hard to find the right gear..and take-offs are harsh, maybe 32's wouldnt be too bad

how do bigger tires allow for a higher top speed? i understand the loss in acceleration but it doesn't seem to make sense that the top speed is gonna increase?

He might mean a drop in RPMs at highway speeds.

yup, thats what he means, more distance travelled at a lower rpm. (larger tire diameter causes this)
