Well, the only reason for a lift would be to fit bigger tires.
So, if you don't want bigger tires, why do you want to lift?
Yes, 31's on a 4" lift will look silly, I know this from
personal experience while waiting for my 33's.
If you want a small lift, they make body lifts from 1"-3"
as well as BJ spacers and shackles in the rear, which would
give you anout an inch of lift.

Lifting would also give more ground clearance...not under the axles but under the body, 4 inches could be the difference between getting high centered or scraping your underside and just cruising right over a rock or ledge, I agree it would look silly with only 31's because 31's look fairly small on a stock height pickup/4runners, 33's would look much better but a lift is not only for getting bigger tires to fit. 33's fit on stock suspension on toyotas
But 31x10.50's on a 4" lift, on what I'm assuming is a DD,
will be very unstable on the road. Also, something I know
from experience.
The goal is to keep the thing low and wide off road, with
the tires providing most of the ground clearance.
That way, your center of gravity stays low and you greatly
reduce the liklihood of a rollover.

31s with a 4" lift will look pretty bad - 31s are JUST big enough on the stock suspension. A better option would be to go with 33"s and a 1-2 inch lift. Believe me, lifts may seem cool, but you're going to hate that high center of gravity. I learned that with my other truck (the Dodge). I had 8" lift, and even running just 36"s it was incredibly tippy at times.
Lift is bad. I've got 33s stuffed under my stock suspension, and it's great offroad, and great on the road. Do a little trimming, gain all your lift from the tires, and you will keep your truck low and stable.
Plus with a 4" lift you're going to have to start extending brake lines and dealing with all the added crap that a pretty large lift requires.
