habanero's 1996 4Runner Build-Up Thread
#1921
So all of a sudden the 99's getting some mods. Somebody tell that husbandio of mine that I are the 4Runner modder and that he should stick to Volvos.
I should be done weeding the garden in the next day or two, time to start at the beginning again. Other than that there isn't much happening 'round here. With any luck Mightymouse will find the sensor I'm looking for.
Hope y'all are having a fine start to your almost summer!

Hi Hab! Hmmmm, what the 99 is getting mods? How can that be? Next, it will have its own build thread. Maybe you can steal the 99 mod parts and get them on the 96 before they are installed???
Enjoy your summer break to the fullest like you always seem to do!

You too rw! And he can't mod the 99 too much because then we'll have to take two trucks out on vacation! I barely give up my seat as it is- too much fun to drive over the bumpity bumps. Selfish I know, but it's a flaw I can pretty much live with.

Yeah, you better keep a close eye on those 99 mods or he will be lobbying to flip a coin to decide what rig heads out west each year. And, hehe, it seems a minor flaw that he can live with too. Gotta be careful that I don't stir up a potential intrafamily fight.......yikes.
Just used up some older corn tortillas in the form of oven baked corn chips sprinkled with chili powder.....tasty snack.

I am foreseeing a two-truck vacation in our future....
On the down side, interaction by cb rather than live in person.
One the plus, he can eat all the Bryce Canyon meat burritos he wants!

Just went and visited Mightymouse and he really came through for me! Will be installing my new little doo-dad in the 96 with pics tomorrow if at all possible.

1" body lift went on the '99. I probably spent 90% of the time fighting with the single left front body mount. Every single other one came right off. That one was frozen in place *solidly* with rust. After trying anything I could think of, I finally had to take the bumper off for access and grind off the head and cut off the bottom part.

Many girls smell like sugar and spice and everything nice.
I smell like gear oil.
So I put the Taco spindles w/manual hubs on the 4Runner not that long ago. They didn't have abs so I no longer have front sensors. On the 4Runner w/abs those sensors are also your speed sensor for the speedometer. Since I still have the rear I was still getting a signal and I still have a working speedometer. Most of the time. If I hit a bump in a certain way at higher speeds especially I lose the signal and therefore the speedo. It stops working until I've slowed down to around 10mph or so and then it starts up again. Since it often happens on the highway that whole slowing down thing is pretty much a not gonna happen.
GPS takes care of knowing what the heck speed I am traveling at. Unfortunately I often forget the GPS. It's also a battery powered hand-held. It fits nicely in the mic holder but still, I want my speedo back.
Upon doing some research I've found this is a problem with SAS'd 3rd gens.
Upon doing much more research I found the fix is to get a Vehicle Speed Sensor out of a Taco that has one and do some wiring. Even better Mossyrocks made a beautiful thread over on Pirate with a how to. http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/toyot...d-sensors.html
A call to Mightymouse and I had my seemingly made of un-obtainium part in my hot not so little hands. Oh joyous day!
So I spent some time on it yesterday and got it done. Upon testing it the speedo was jumping all over the place. Well, that's not going to do!
Today I tested again, but took the abs fuse out of the dash panel. I could not get the main fuse out that's in the engine compartment and I didn't want to break it.
Anyway.
The speedo was still jumpy, but smoothed out over highway speeds and it was only a little jumpy compared to before. After doing a bunch of mulling I decided to snip the grey/blue wire and run only the vss to the speedo, not have it spliced in as mossyrocks successfully had done.
Test drove it again and that seems to have fixed the problem. Not only that, but my speedo is (in my very short test) close to being on target.
Oh yes!
Anyway, some pics...

Making a VSS work with a 96 originally ABS equipped 4Runner:
Get the gauge cluster out again. (There's pics somewhere in the last few pages on how to). Pull out the brown connector.
We are looking for the
grey w/blue stripe wire for the speedo (2nd pin) and the
Black w/yellow stripe 12v switched wire (7th pin)
Mossyrocks just used a tap. I opted to splice them. Later I cut the grey/blue wire and used the signal wire from the VSS for the speedo and left the ABS signal out of the picture all together. For me, that's how it's working best.
I removed the pins I was working on by carefully taking out the two white keepers on the connector and simply pulling out the pins.
Put it all back together and now pin2 grey/blue goes to the VSS signal wire and pin7 black/yellow has the VSS 12v wire spliced in.
Next I chose to run the wiring between and through the shifter gaskets. I stuck a couple o' pieces of electrical tape on the metal part because it's sharp (watch your fingers), even though it's not coming in contact with the wires.

So the connector is wired up like so:
It's not the connector that came with the VSS, but it's 3 wire and clips in so all I needed was to wire it up.
Then find this plug on the right side of the output shaft. Unscrew the bolt and pry it out. Gear oil will come out and if you're me it will run along the skid plate and drip on your head, making you smell bad and face you with a future 3 shampoo shower.
And replace with the sensor. Mightymouse brought me just the right part, the gearing matches, it's the electronic and not the cable driven one with the shorter shaft than the cable drive version and it has 3 wires. Had to have come out of a possibly 96 or more likely 97+ Taco, or some non-abs Toyota truck maybe he'll chime in? Several years had them, this one fit just right gear and all.
route the goofy blue wire holder out of the way (zip tied to the same holder as the o2 sensor but otherwise not finished in this pic)
And there you go.

Made the locker switch light up with the dash lights.
Find pins that will fit. Luckily the washer switch I use for my garage door opener had a few unused pins in it and they fit in the locker switch's connector.
Carefully pry up the keeper in the connector
insert pins from wherever you found some:
and push keeper back into place
Okay, only one more pic. I spliced my wires into the lighter's light bulb wires because it's connected to the dimmer switch. I believe the pins to be 2 and 3, but for sure it was the ones in between the two that control the locker itself. Now when the dash lights are on I can see:
