habanero's 1996 4Runner Build-Up Thread

You're doing so much more to yours!
96 4Runner 316,157 miles
Redline went in the transmission and transfer cases, rear driveshaft on, REVERSED
out of the driveway and did a short test drive.
Got a few little things to button up, but it sure was a lot quieter. So far....I'm a little jumpy about all this transmission stuff for some reason.
Crossing fingers I've finally gotten somewhere with all this...

4-sticks! Forgot you had those. I love telling people I have 20 forward speeds and 4 reverse. Not on the fly, but still!
Also, your cell phone holder... how is that mounted? I'm looking at installing some for the wife and myself, that looks nice, out of the way, and sturdy.

Cell phone holder starts at 2919...note that I ended up making the exact mount with a piece of aluminum that I had laying around because it was much stiffer than the steel thing I made. That thing wheels without moving.

Also, here's another option Spiker Engineering came out with more recently:

I'm sure you'll come up with something good.

96 4Runner with more miles than yesterday! Woot!!
Front driveshaft in, skids on. Spent some time trying to find that front end noise. My wonderful husband and I took turns standing outside while the other drove it around in circles. I'd narrowed it down to mostly happening on the left- driver's- side. Could swear most of the noise was coming from the front but, standing outside the truck it was more obviously in the rear. Then we noticed that the left rear wheel has a good amount more forward travel within the wheel well when you goose it than the right wheel.
Tomorrow I will pull the lower control arm on that side and see what the bushing looks like, then go from there.

My husband got a great idea and put his go-pro on the left lower control arm so we could watch the bolts wiggle back and forward. That translates into a lot of axle movement. The bushings are a bit messed up too, but don't know if they're the cart or the horse. Kinda thinking the cart.
The holes appear to be a little woggled out.
Thoughts, ideas, and magic fixes wholly welcomed.

Maybe something like eimkeith's lower control arm skids for the front of the rear lower control arm mount? It looks like the bolt runs through it...

Yep, they're flogged out, anyone with tig skills you can call on Hab, that could build up the worn section around the holes ? You'll need to look at the metal sleeves inside the Nolathane Bushes, as I'd suspect they are also worn length wise moving around in the housing, maybe stitch weld high tensile washers over holes (correcting the hole wear/mis-alignment) replace the bolts and make sure they stay tight (check regularly) Using Nolathane Bushes, definitely has its advantages, but there stiffness cause problems such as this IMHO.

I'm a little overboard on checking those bolts after very nearly losing one a couple of years ago, out in the middle of the Maze district of Canyonlands. Lost a nut (used nut off rt front upper control arm- worked great- and got a new nut once I got back to civilization) so those get checked early and often now. The rear ones also get double-nutted.
Love the idea of using heavy duty washers over the holes. I think I'm going to have to address the issue of the heavy duty link in the stock duty mounts somehow.
You are all so very awesome!
One thought was to have the holes built back up and drilled to the proper size like Kitty says, but if I had that done (I need a Kitty here!), then added the washers you all mention to shore things up a bit that might just be crazy enough to work.
I've also contacted eimkeith and asked a couple of questions about his rear lower link skids.
Doing the research.

nice thing about a washer is you could drill some holes (not a lot) and have some small rosette welds for some extra oomph. but i am no welder or fab guy so seek professional help since your butt is literally gonna count on this..
if no one is willing to tackle it i guess you can always do a frame swap

And some HS kid will run your beautiful little truck on the highway in 4lo-lo and break all our hearts.
You know, once he can reverse it out of the driveway....
You're just gonna have to keep it. Besides, what else are you going to do with the world's longest trans trans trans skid, turn it into a shelf or something?

Whoa whoa whoa whoa back that horse right on up!
(sorry, we're back to reverse again)
Definitely will be talking to some people I know who know more about what they're doing than I ever will. Having my butt stay attached to the truck and not swaying weirdly- it randomly feels like there's no sway bars, kinda wanders a bit- and that's with just those small woggles- es muy importante!

Might as well scrap the whole truck. I can take it for you down here in Tennessee. I could get you a few more bucks for it at the scrapyard
