ICK! Mud! The afterward clean-up, of course.
Camping with a buddy is always fun even on tarp-necessary days. We're supposed to be real cold here with a chance of snow. Have a great time out there and stay warm!
Finally got around to thanksgiving dinner last night, and got the tree up. There's a toilet sitting in the kitchen. I've been telling the kid it's his Christmas gift.......
......he's starting to worry it really is.

This afternoon the hatch stayed up just long enough to lure me under, then bopped me on the head like little bunny foo foo.

Hahaha. Have a great holiday! And as my grandpa used to say "Watch your sore head!"

I scrolled way back hoping to see some sewing! Just imagine there is some gore showing and blood flowing and it's good practice for stitchin'.
You could duplicate that form with just a razor knife, an awl and large needle. Or go for it and get proper knives, rollers, punches. Just remember that fancy stitchin' makes for three times the work, what looks like 8 simple stitches under a foot long is 24 stitches that you can see. Let's call the boot 6 inches tall, that's twelve linear feet of hand stitching thanks to the sexy double stitching...
I'd buy one, that's about half the stitching I did to redo that headliner if I'm estimating anywhere near correct on the other hand you could color match a steering wheel cover.

Replaced hatch lift struts. One person (and a broomstick) can do this job with a little patience.
I used a pair of Strongarm 6815
The hardware consists of a post, wave washer and e-clip.
I did one at a time but you will need a way to prop the hatch up while you switch the lifts out as a single one cannot hold up the hatch. It's heavy, be careful.
The clip is springy, I kept a finger on the clip while prying it off with a small screwdriver. I used a punch and hammer to gently tap the post out of its hole, catching the wave washer as it came out.
Here's a pic of the hardware for top and bottom of one side. Note the post for the top is longer than the bottom one.
Here I'm trying to show that the post has a squared section at the top that keys into the square hole in the lift support. Push the post through the square hole in the support first, though the hole in the bracket on the body, put the wave washer on, push the post through the last hole and carefully re-install the clip.
I did the top first, it's easy and then the bottom sits on the bracket as I put it together. A little hard to do the bottom one-handed, but not impossible. The other hand will have to maneuver the hatch as you put the hardware in.
Works great! I've seen mixed reviews on the Strong-Arm lift supports, will try to remember to note here if they start to allow the hatch to droop. Right now they open the hatch all the way up without any help at all.
Also, road salt is back and I don't like it. Ick.

They don't come with any hardware, re-use what you have. The hardware consists of a post, wave washer and e-clip.

Noticed a bit of electrical bleed when I was using the aux back-up lights the other day. I used a blower fan switch for it which is on-off-moron....er, more on, for low-off-high. Been using them awhile wired as is but I don't remember it bleeding backwards like it is. The low and high are connected so I cut the bridge that links them apart so I now have an on-off-on. Problem solved. Should have done that in the first place.

Glad to see I am not the only one that got to experience getting hit the head with a weak support arm. Just changed mine not long ago on the 3rd gen. Those are some heavy tail gates. We had to deal with road salt. I got it off as quick as possible. Been some nice days lately but guess it is going to change next week. Hopefully one month or so left and the better weather is to come soon.

Hi Terry! Salt, so annoying, and then you want to wash it off but then the temps are going to drop and you won't be able to get in when the doors freeze.....
We've been glad for the nicer temps, sounds like we won't be so lucky for January, if the weatherman's right.

no, let it snow (in the mtns!)
Its just hard to find a car wash with a real underbody wash. But I hear ya on the salt. Now they spray some stuff on roads before moisture, that s'pozed to keep 'em from freezing. Have no idea what sort of nasty chemy's that crap is. But I'm sure it's pet friendly!

Need snow! Guess N Co got a lot in Dec (way below avg on drain basins 1 dec, now at > normal.) IIRC last year it was pretty sparse, until was it late Mar or April, then mtns kept getting hammered. Lot of resorts (save those with elk routes) stayed open until June.

In our area they use a salt solution, brine. They looked into some kind of beet juice some years back but it was cost prohibitive is what I heard. Guess the brine is better than the rock salt that they still sometimes use.
Unrelated, from the trip:
Who wants to see what's in there???

I DIDN'T LOOK!!!!
Large male black bear poo? Okay, this was really on the way to our camp spot on South Rim in Big Bend NP.
It wasn't this...
I did find this in the same area...Superman was having an awesome day.
We took the TDI Jetta because 45mpg and we weren't going off-road. Missed the 4Runner! The 4Runner did start right up in the cold weather after sitting for 8 days.
(ps. I kinda wanted to look)
