New home in Colorado. I pulled the floor mats to clean them. It will need new floor mats up front for sure. The DS front is trashed.
I already have some sliders on the way for it.
Tires are a different issue though. It will clear 285s as is. However, a 295/75/16 is also an option. So is a 255/85/16. I can get the KM2s in the 255 size for a good price and am leaning that way.
So, how many of you are running 255s without a body lift on a 3rd gen? What about guys with 295s? Are you running wheel spacers? I really want to keep the sport wheels that are on it.

I am running the 255/85's with 3" suspension lift. I don't seem to have any issues as of yet. I have not wheeled it with these tires, but have tried to test the flex a bit with no problems.

Well, I am going to stick with the 285s at this point. After talking to a few guys that are running the 255s, the general consensus was that it wouldn't clear without rubbing. A body lift and likely some rear wheel well trimming were going to be required. I also want to see how it does on the hwy with the 285s. The plan is to regear to 5.29s because of the stupid tall OD in the A340F.

The A340 trannies have a 70% overdrive. Its one of the tallest overdrives of any A/T on the market. When you compare it to the 5spd available in the same models, they have a 85% overdrive.
I'll put it in terms of miles per hour vs rpms.
My new 4runner runs 265/75/16s right now. It has 4.30s from the factory in it. At 80mph I am running at 2600rpms in OD. However, the same 4runner with a 5spd with only 4.10s is running 3100 rpms.
Obviously, the holding power of the 5spd is MUCH better than that of the A/T. It won't require needing a lower gear nearly as much at hwy speeds.
So, in order for me to get the same kind of holding power at hwy speeds, I would need to install 5.29s to get a similar rpm as the 5spd has.
Plain and simple is that Toyota/Aisin never changed the gearing on the A340 from 1984-2004. It hunts for 3rd way too often on slight inclines which results in poorer fuel economy, less power, and a difference of 1100 rpms when it up shifts from OD to 3rd.
When you drive your A/T around on the freeway, how often do you notice the torque convertor lock and unlock? You will feel it when it unlocks and notice a 250rpm increase when it does it. Normally, after a few seconds of this the tranny will then shift into 3rd. That unlock and constant searching for a better gear creates heat in the tranny.
In my situation with this 4runner, I plan to tow my pop-up camper a lot with it. I am going to install 5.29s with the 33s to get similar power to what a 5spd has to offer. It will also allow me to run easier at hwy speeds while towing and even without towing.
5spds get better mileage running higher rpms than the auto do as well.

Well, I ordered my tires today. Ended up with the KM2s again.
For anyone wanting a smoking deal on tires onlinetires.com is the place to get them.
I just ordered some 255/85/16 KM2s for $156/tire + shipping.
The plan at this point is a 1" body lift and a 3/4" Toytec spacer up front to help clear them. Basically these will be 33.3" tall x 10.5" wide. Hopefully I don't have to trim too much off the bumpers, but so be it if I have to.

255/85-16 BFG KM2s. These are a 33.3" tall x 10.3" wide tires. So, basically they are a 34x10.5 roughly.
I am a new Toytec dealer now, so I figured I might as well run what I am going to sell. So, I also went down on Monday and grabbed a 3/4" front spacer for the OME springs, a diff drop, and a 1" body lift.
The body lift is backordered a couple weeks, so the tires will have to wait to be mounted until then. Same with the sliders.

My new 4runner runs 265/75/16s right now. It has 4.56s from the factory in it. At 80mph I am running at 2700rpms in OD. However, the same 4runner with a 5spd with only 4.10s is running 3100 rpms.

You mentioned that your new 2000 4Runner has 4.56 gears stock...have you verified that by lifting up the rear of the vehicle and counting the turns of the drivershaft and rear tire? I only ask b/c I've never heard of a '00 V6 auto (w/elocker) come stock w/ 4.56 gears? Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the majority of elocked thirds (if not all) matched with the V6, come w/ 4.30 gears only?
I have seen 4Runners w/ 4cyl engines have 4.56 gears stock, but I've never seen newer 3rd gen V6 autos w/ 4.56 gears...elocked or not. I think if Toyota offered 4.56 gears on V6 4Runners, you'd see more guys swapping out their 4.10 third members for 4.56 third members down at the local swap meets. I know I would!
And 5.29s w/ an auto on the highway...don't know if I'd do that, but that's just me. I'm sure when you're pulling a loaded trailer behind you it'd be ok, but I'm curious to hear how your 4Runner will do going down the interstate @ 70mph without a trailer...seems like the engine would be screaming.

You must have missed my previous post about the stupid tall OD in the A/Ts. The KM2s measure out at 33.3" tall tire and 5.29s is perfect for the A/Ts. I will still be turning less RPMs at the same speed than a manual truck with 4.56s and 33s.
At 70mph on the freeway with 33" tire and 5.29s and the A/T = 2639rpms
At 70mph on the freeway with 33" tire and 4.56s and the M/T = 2763rpms
