I love my 4 cyl. It's great for gas mileage, and really doesn't lack power. When I first got my truck I had in my mind that it was slow and sluggish and it really bugged me. Then I drove a friends 99 with a 3.0 and mine was just as quick if not a little more. I didn't get a truck for the speed, so I couldn't be happier with the 4 cyl.

I am very happy with my 4-banger. Gotta love it for reliability, ease of repair/maintence, decent fuel economy, and "the little engine that could" feeling.

i'll add a little more love for the 22RE...

extremely reliable, easy to work on, parts are relatively cheap (not that you need many)...

it's not a drag racing engine by any means, but, as long as you rev it (which it has no problem with) i find it to be powerful enough. just gotta be willing to downshift...

only soft spot is the plastic timing chain guides...but $60 (for steal backed guide kit from EB) and half a day or so of wrenchin' will take care of that.

I've had my truck up to 95 mph with its 22RE engine for a short time. I didn't even realize I was going that fast until I looked at my GPS later.

The 2.7 is the way to go. There is no lack of power as some seem to think. In fact it will lay away some of the older v6 engines. Mike

I'm pretty sure the 2.7 is not the 22RE. I thought that's what we were talking about.

I'd much rather have the 3.4 over the 2.7, despite the better mileage of the 2.7. But I would MUCH rather have the 2.7 over the 3.0, but that wasn't an option, and I'd probably rather have the 22RE over the 3.0.

Sorry about that. My mistake. The title is "Your openion on the 4 cyl. engine"
Then after re-reading his post he ask about the 22RE.

The 22RE is a great engine. Low on power, but will run forever. probably the best feature is that it is a simple engine, and is very easy to work on. I love mine

Like most have said... the 20 and 22 series of engine are GREAT! I love the 22RE more since it's EFI, but they are all really close to each other. The power isnt anything to love (stock ofcourse) but the torque is something else! If I remember right, it had great torque for engines made in their day (80s). My old runner (lil brother has it now) has about 350k on it. Everything within the engine (minus normal maintnenace) is original..... reason why I bought another toyota!

I bought mine for the reliability and gas mileage. I haven't had to change anything major since I've had it (timing chain was going, but only because the previous owner put a cheap chinese chian in). If you use good parts when rebuilding these, they will last a very long time.

My gas mileage is aroun 19mpg combined and that sure beats my old V8 dakota at 12mpg.

Offroad I can get it faster than my not-so-built- rear suspension can handle. And in 4 low it has plenty of grunt to climb things.

The only times I miss a V8 are:

When trying to drag race rice rockets at stop lights (4800lbs and 116hp don't really take off)

When going through mud (Is usually barely enough balls to clean the treads, granted I have all terrains)

Climbing steep sand (Again doesn't spin fast enough, I have to keep 1st gear pinned.)

Other than that my motor has been super reliable, so much to the point that I can blow ungodly amounts of money on other things like suspension and air freshener for after visits to some of California's finest "bertos" resturaunts.

Hello All

Reasons I like the 22re:
Runs forever
Takes a beating
Responds well to upgrades
One of the flatest tq. curves I've ever seen.

Dislikes:
Needs more power (for me allmost all motors need alittle more )

Other than that I tow my cars to the track and can go almost anywhere I ever want/wanted to go w/ this motor.

C-YA!!

Ok, the 4-bangers are reliable and get better gas mileage than my six. I will give you that. Now, take that same 4-banger-powered rig, load it up with camping gear and some friends, put some crap in the roof rack, drive up to Flagstaff (7000ft) and try to pass that slow-moving big rig on a two-lane road.

That is why I chose the V6 over the 4.

also the 4 banger will get worse gas milage then the v6 pulling the same load.

if your comparing the engines for purpose it comes down to power and MPG

The 4 banger has less power but gets better MPG. Unless you start towing alot of stuff. But the 3.4 gets good milage anyway...I consistently get 19-20 mpg I dunno what the 4 banger guys get but its probably not that much higher...maybe 25 mpg? dunno

The 22r is a great motor. I raced a Toyota truck in the SCORE stock mini class with a 22r and it might not be as fast but they last(I won 6 Championships with it). My motor would turn 5000 RPM for hours getting through silt beds in Nevada and the motor had over 160,000 on it (stock). Later we replaced it with a 3.4L and is the only motor I would use other then a 22R and when we pulled it out we placed it in another truck and it now has 400,000 on it with only a head gasket put on at 290,000. 22RE GREAT MOTOR.

You need to dyno yours properly first before you speak about any numbers

My 22R was a beast. It was very obvious that it had been used and abused, but that didnt stop it from starting each time and running like its supposed to.
