are you talking about the 3rd member only? or what? if they are bot hte 8" rear end, then yes they will fit... however, i dont know much about the tacos, and i think that they will not fit due to hearing something about the non trd tacos having like an 8.4" rear end.... not 100% sure on this

Non-TRD Taco's (2wd and 4wd) with a V6 should both use the same diff as the Tundra and T100. The so-called 8.4" diff that is really 8".
So yes, a '97 4x4 Taco rear diff should fit a '97 Taco V6 2wd rear.
I believe the 2wd 4cyl is different though.

Do you have the 2wd "work" truck or the 2WD Prerunner. They are different and have different 3rd's and different axles all together.
The "work" trucks have 7.5" rears. While the PreRunners could have 8" or 8.5" depending on what options you have.

AFAIK, only the 2wd Taco's w/ the 2.4L engine have the 7.5" diff and the rest have the Tundra style diff.
Here's the easy way to check- are the bolts holding the 3rd member to the axle housing 14mm nuts with 10mm studs or 12mm nuts on 8mm studs?
14mm nuts = Tundra style diff.
Also, the diff "covers" look different since the Tundra style diff has the big bearing cap braces. Tundra style on the left, older 8" style on the right:

If you have a Prerunner, then you can swap in any complete 4x4 Tacoma Rear (they are all 6 lug). If you just want the 3rd member, then you need the "8.4" 3rd (non e-locker).
If you want the e-locker rear, you can wire the locker or get a cable to engage it. You can find a complete e-locker rear for around $700.
