wierd sound (clutch and whinying): help diagnosis needed
#21
Here's a way to diagnose the issue I speak of. With the vehicle running and in neutral you should hear the squeek. Lay down under the vehicle (emergency brake on) and grab the clutch fork. You should be able to hear the pitch of the squeek change when you move it. If so, then I believe you have a dry pivot point. You can pull the tranny and fix it or not. It will be fine for a long time unless the squeek drives you nuts.
If the pitch doesn't change then I am wrong and I apologize for wasting your time trying to help. But you aren't out $90+ from the dealer for a diagnosis either.
Many people believe that the dealer is the best place to have cars serviced. I for one would not take anything to the dealer. I have been working on vehicles for 20 years and I was trained by my Grandfather who has had a shop for 60 years...but I am sure your average dealer tech, fresh out of school has more experience...
Do what you wish, you came here for help/opinions you have mine.

I got a new one for free so wtf should I be complaining about. Lates!
And yes, I have now officially heard of a 5 speed tranny going out (mated with the 5VZ).

I second what Albuqerque Jim says. My truck was doing the same thing. I unbolted the slave cylinder pulled off the boot and greased the pivot ball and manipulated the fork and the noise went away. The problem is the TO bearing is barely touching the pressure plate fingers causing the noise.

I just had a similar problem with my Taco. It's actually been going on for a few months but I chose to ignore it until now.
Symptom: High pitched chirping noise, cricket, when idle in gear or moving in gear. Press the clutch in, even ever so slightly, and the noise goes away. LEt the clutch pedal back out and the noise returns.
I just got my truck back from the dealership today and it was covered by my extended warranty. They diagnosed it as the throw out bearing and also replaced the pilot bearings. I no longer have the noise.
I took the truck in at 7:30am and got it back at 9:30am and the sheet said they had replaced the clutch rod bushing. I knew this wasn't the problem and so did the service writer when I talked to him before hand. So when I got the truck back I still heard the noise and just turned it right back around into line again and got the service writer out there to talk to him. He hopped in and we drove it around the block to one of their service areas. He got the lead mechanic on his crew to check it out who then proceeded to talk to the guy who worked on my truck originally. The lead asked if I had taken it through any water, I said no but I was recently in some mud but nothing too deep. I think the lead was trying to tell the service writer it shouldn't be covered since I obviously go offroading more than your average 4x4 owner. So apparently taking your truck through deep enough water can screw it up since it can trap water in there somehow, that's what I overheard. He was looking at the winch and armor and such.
Anyway, I got it under my 100k warranty and the noise is gone.
