Hey, guys. I gotta question. I have a 98 tacoma 4x4 with the manual hubs. Do the wheel bearing have to come out of these things and be packed regularly ?? Or are they a sealed unit bearing??

 

I haven't heard anything about the bearings being sealed. I know the older ones aren't, but I'm not sure about a '98.

 

Anyone know???

 

I believe it's a sealed unit. But I've been repacking them every few years for all my toyota's. Cost only a few bucks and does seem be doiing some good. I haven't replaced a worn bearing in like 6 or 7 years!

 

Really?? How difficult is it to do?? I don't know if it would be easier with Manual hubs or the Auto's.

 

It takes me about half an hour per wheel. I don't know if auto's are more labor intensive, I've allways had manuals on all my cars.

 

I'll have to take alook at the Haynes Manual and see how they come apart. Is there any secret to tightening the spindle nut back up?

 

No there isn't. But you'll need a torque wrench. It's really easy to do. Just follow the manual.

Is it true that you have to get new gaskets or seals?? Someone told me that.

 

it is a sealed bearing so you shouldn't have to repack. if it goes bad you just need to press it off and press a new one on. well, there's more to it but that's just part of the job. I'll see if I can find the schematic of this assembly, give me a day or so.

 

might as well since you will have everything out anyway and these items are relatively cheap.

 

OK, so I'm a little confused now. It is a sealed bearing?

 

the two round things with holes in them at the top of this pic are the bearings. they press on to the axles. you can pack grease if you want to but the bearings don't require it. they are just like the rear wheel bearings.
