wheel bearing confusion
hey guys. about to do do my wheels bearings
i usually buy all my parts from rockauto.com but they have a crazy confusing list of different parts.
srunner, prerunner, DLX model. not sure which one i have. is there an easy way to tell? all i know is i have a 3.4L rear wheel drive TRD with a locker.
cause rockauto is so cheap compared to anyone else its insane. so i just want to make sure i order the right parts the first time.
edit: doing my FRONT wheel bearings. forgot that part

i just called them, didnt realize that they would be open so late. ya i was right, as long as it says RWD it will be the right part. cool, done deal. thanks guys.
and if anyone would like to share their info about the difference between s-runner, DLX, and pre-runner.....i'd still like to know. always have been slightly confused about the models

You'll want to buy the OEM seals. They were changed in a 2003 TSB and the new version has a larger ID opening.

the seals are for the front, not the rear. rockauto lists there parts weird sometimes. but the front wheel bearings and seals are listed as "4x4, s-runner, prerunner, RWD, & DLX". so if the part you are looking for is on a RWD, then that part is what you need
for instance, i was looking at the list for front inner wheel bearings, and rockauto lists those parts for a RWD truck due to the fact that the 4x4 front wheel bearings are a different type. so as long as rockauto shows the front wheel bearing as being for a RWD truck, that means its the proper part for ALL rear wheel drive toyotas of that year.
see what i mean? i was confused when i saw their list of parts

hey guys, so again.....more confusion. my haynes manual shows one thing on how to replace the wheel bearings. it shows on 2wd's that the front disc/hub wheel bearings are all the same unit. well that isnt the case at all.
so now i think i have the wrong wheel bearings from rockauto. their website shows that there is an inner and outer wheel bearing. according to the haynes manual its the same thing, inner and outer. but.....alldatapro.com shows that the front wheel bearing is pressed in.
i have the hub halfway taken apart now. what i've seen is alldatapro.com is correct. i have to take the steering knuckle off and get the old bearing pressed out and the new pressed in. but it only shows one bearing. i also have this lock nut on the inside part of the hub that requires a special tool. anyone know wtf is going on here? cause right now i am super pissed about all the mis-information.

and apparently i need a special tool to remove the upper ball joint. is this necessary? anyone have any tips or tricks without having to get these special tools? or a link to a write up on this?
i've searched and searched and havent come up with much

just to sum things up and hopefully help someone out in the future.
seems like the prerunner and 4wd front hubs are similar in the fact that they are pressed in bearings.......where the 2wd DLX, standard cab, and s-runner have "serviceable" front wheel bearings. if you are looking for front bearings for the pre-runner, you'll need a special lock nut tool (which you'll need to buy a new one), bearing "set-29" bearing, and a hydraulic press. rockauto has them for around 50 bucks per bearing (one per each side). the local autoparts stores want 80-120$ for them.
