the diff lock started in 1998 on the taco's when the trd package came out. The 1996/7 didn't have that option.
I don't think you will find a 2.7 w/ the trd package (but I could be way off here) though; at least I have never seen one.
However the 2.7 can easily handle 3,000

That is incorrect, my 97 came with a factory e-locker. Plus the 1st gen tacos are clearly the best looking...

I think it started in 97 with the slightly redesigned fron end and TRD pkg. I think it would be easier to just swap the entire rear axle which would bolt right up. Then no housing mod'g would be nec.

you know, for what its worth, I dont think that the 97 had a TRD package...mine is an SR5 V6 - no TRD logos anywhere, just a big ugly stripe and a SR5 logo on the side - further, I dont think the different coils and yota billies came out until 98 - my truck had stock tokicos on it.
so basically 97s had an e-locker as an option but I dont think that locker came with any other off-road "enhancements"

lol, so I will just shush on this one; hehe
I was under the impression that it was only an option on the TRD's. But learn something new all the time I guess ey, thats why I wasn't sure in the first post.
