what are some simple power gaining mods for my yota

i am now running 33's on my 82 toyota pickup and my little 22r is officially lifeless. I cant afford gears for a while so i need to gain a little more power while im waiting. what are some somewhat reasonable things other than exhaust (which is coming in a couple weeks) i can do to regain some power?

It sucks to say but I've had my 92 4x4 for years, rebuilt the engine once, it has 33's on it, and my engine sucks too, I have the best exhaust intake cam and whatever else I could buy to get more power, but the only you can do is gears or smaller tires, or diff. engine. I check on gears this winter and I was quoted 2800$ for both front and rear 4.88s with a locker, I couldn't affort that so now I just hope for a tail wind so that I can geter up to 70 mph on the freeway.

Clean everything, take off and clean the intake, run some engine cleaner (seafoam) adjust your carb to where it is perfect, only take with you what you must, lighten the load as much as possible,

make sure your timing is perfect, wires are good, plugs are good, cap and rotor are good, youd be suprised on how that stuff can add up to more power,

when i got my 86 it wouldnt do 55 on flat ground, i cleaned everything in the engine by hand somewhat good, then ran a motovac on it and cleaned the rest, changed the plugs cap, rotor, wires, new airfilter, new oil, it will cruise 85 on the freeway now no problem, and runs 500 times better then when i got it.

Freebies: Remove spare tire (fix-a-flat), inflate tires to max, run <¼ tank, plug the EGR vacuum actuator line (not sure if this does anything, but it'll feel stronger with improved throttle response).

Maverick, shop around, that's insane! I paid $1100 for 5.29s and a rear Truetrac. I was quoted $650 for gears only, all prices installed. Another shop in town was double that....

Umm its an 82?? that crap dont even work on newer trucks I know its pointless on an 82

for an 82 I would look into a new head best source for 4cyl toyota performance

I would highly recomend a good ignition like the jacobs (get them off ebay for $100)
new Carb or maybe a better cam?

Heck being an 82 you got tons of room for improvment. For the cost of a gear change you could just about do a full rebuild with a Hi perf head and cam provided there was no boring or crank grinding involved. For the price you where quoted for gears you could do all of the above and still buy some used 4.56 or 4.88 OEM diffs.

Before I put a head on it I would put new gears in it without lockers. Its not that expensive. You can get the diff already rebuilt and just swap yours out.Cost about 800 bucks.

LOOK AT GETTING A DIFFERENT DISTRIBUTOR AND ROTOR AND CAP, CHECK OUT LC ENGINEERING'S WEBSITE, EVERYTHING YOU COULD NEED FOR YOTA ENGINE AND DRIVELINE PERFORMANCE. READ THIS ARTICLE ABOUT SETTING YOUR TIMING A DIFFERENT WAY TO INCREASE ENGINE PERFORMANCE. HOPE THIS HELPS YOU

Unhappy Hate to Say it...

...but proper gears are what ya need. To pump your engine up significantly would probably be more expensive than 4.88 gears. My 22R does well with stock engine, 33" tires and 4.88's.
