i think it should be easier to start with lower octane. octane is the measure of resistance to burning. so higher octane fuel is less volitile and so it's harder to vaporize. this can make cold (that is winter temperatures) starts harder because the fuel can't get vaporized. that's why it's usually advisable to run lower octane in the winter.

Just going form my experiences. If they are different the anybody's studies, they are willing to contest me.
Ps: A scientist would be classified as anybody with a Bachelor of Science (BS as I prefer)......
Therefore, this could be some person that took 2 years of university, tried the same test as I, with a different vehicle, and noticed no results.
There are many variables as to what will effect a motors performance (any mix of the following: Temperature, oil's grade, motor's condition, modifications etc. etc.). It's just like people that are allergic to peanut butter, animals, etc.
Sorry, I don't mean to come across as an a-hole, it's not intended.

190 hp pick up truck.....guess what octane I run....I'd run higher if I ever heard any ping....but since I havent I wont....
I ran 93 once and the MPG were worse, but I only ran 1 tank so my calc. may not be very acturate....

Here is my experience, 2003 v8:
I run 87 octane most of the time but I will run the 93 from time to time. When I run the higher octane this is what I notice: Fewer downshifts when encountering hills, especially when towing. I also notice slightly better gas mileage. Not sure why? But the downshifting, or lack of downshifting, is consistant (same hill, same speed, same conditions). Running the higher octane seems like the engine does not have to work as hard.

I said I would never put 87 in my truck, but since 87 is now $2.21 that's all my truck drinks.
However, I can tell the difference between the three grades. The truck is deffenatly more punchy with the higher grades of gas. But whatever, it's not like i go around stomping the gas.
One more thing. with 92 the truck doesn't seem to run as smooth.
