What kind of gas do you guys fill up with?

The recommendation I got at the dealer when I bought my 4Runner (2000 Limited V6) was to use 89 or higher. With the recent hikes in gas prices, filling up is comparable to anal rape without lube here in California - 89 has been $2.30+ for the past 3 months.

So, I am curious to see what everyone else is filling up with, and whether it would be safe to go down to 87 grade gas to save some $. What gas do you fill up with, and what year/model do you drive?

I dont know what the octane ratings are but I use mid and here in central Wa. it is currently $2.26. It sucks. I can only imagine what you guys that travel the free ways and big cities deal with.

I've been running 87 in my 97 for a couple years. No problems. My q45 ran fine on it as well. The only car I've ever noticed a difference in grades was my 69 chevelle. Ran much better on 93 for whatever reason.

I drive from Fort Worth to Austin (3 hour trip) about once a week. I was using 89 for some time and I would always have an empty tank when I got to Austin. I was too broke one time to buy 89 so I bought 87. When I got back to Fort Worth from Austin I still had .10 of a tank left. I continued to use 87 for the next week. On my next trip to Austin I used 87 and had .25 left in my tank when I got there. I’ll be sticking with the 87.

Manual says 87 with 3rd gens...thats all you need unless you are supercharged. You truck will run just as it is on 89.

Yeah Hawaiian gas prices are seriously out of control. I was there a couple months ago, good thing we rented an economy ˟˟˟˟box, and saved some gas money that way.

I'm going to look in the manual tonight, and I will probably try running 87 from now on. I'm a bit concerned over the fact that the dealer recommended using 89, but with the gas prices being where they are, I'm willing to try other things.

Don't know what bonehead salesman recommended that. Use what the engine requires - 87 Octane, and save you some money.

I use 87. Be happy you are not in Europe where the gas price is close to $6 now.

I use 93. It just last a lot longer in my runner for some reason. I've tried it all and have the best luck with 93.

Crap, rgular is $1.30 hear. I used to fill up wit 92 but some of the guys on this forum said it only causes increased carbone buildup if the engine isn't designed for it. The owners manual calls for: "at least 87 octain" for my91 4runner.

Heard someone say it will be $4 per gallon by the end of summer here in Wa. That will be a $50-$75 fill up. Cant do it! Wont do it! I will walk or ride a mountain bike or have a "car pool" and just push my 4runner around town. But that is just wrong to have prices that high. Maybe there is more to why the gas prices are as high as they are. Maybe they just are not telling us something about our oil reserves or a polution factor. Wish we knew.

I really don't see how someone could come up with that number. That's a little high. I'm with you, if prices go that high, i'll be selling the 4Runner for a prius.

Good luck, no offense but how do you sell a gas hog when times are bad or when they get bad? I know I wont be able to and would not want to. I wonder who exactly is running the oil program in Iraq as we speak. being they do not have an active govt. who controls the oil sales? Dont we?

just a thought. If our oil reserves were nearly tapped would the govts. tell us flat out? Or would they increase gas prices little by little until they were to the point of the majority not being able to afford them and walking or riding non gas powered sources. if they flat out said were in trouble with our oil reserves there would be a mass panic. I think there was a panic in the 70's wasnt there? Promting the making or something of the Texas Chainsaw massacre. I remember in around 1995 when gas was $1 or so a gallon. Any thoughts?

I have to use 91 for my S/C, but here in Costco it runs only $2.09 for 91, which isn't too bad I think.

I've been running the 87 octane for a few weeks. At $2.36 a gallon, I'm looking for any relief. I haven't noticed any ill effects form it. I just don't want to accelerate hard up a hill though.

PING PING PING.
