Sounds to me like the fan idler or an alternator. What I would do is pull all the belts off the engine and then start it up to see if the sound is gone. If the sound is gone with no belts just add a belt then check for the noise and keep doing that until you find out what belt/accessory is making the noise.

haha, i live in a higher point, it does get somewhat cold, but im sure its still not cold to what ur used to haha. ur friend 4runner seems like thats the closest thing...
