What engine for the yota?
I have a 95 4runner with 150180 miles on it and thought about maybe in the future doing an engine swap. I have seen toyota pickups and 4runners that have done swaps with engines such as corvette LT-1's, vortec 6cy's, carbed chevy engines, and supra engines. I have heard good things from people about after the operation on their yotas for the v6 to v8 swap, so i thought if here soon i might need a new engine anyways, y not go bigger and better.

I know that Downey and NWOR have all sorts of kits, and accessories to make swaps easier.
My personal opinion is that the 3.0 V6 is underpowered, and while some mods help, there is only so much you can do to it.
I would go with the Toyota 3.4 V6 found in newer 4Runners and Tacomas. There are quite a few of them out there, and they are proven reliable. As an added bonus, you can get a supercharger to sweeten the deal.
Offroad Solutions offers a wiring harness, and they have swapped a 3.4 into a 95 4Runner as well. (the owner's truck)
I will probably swap my 3.0 out for a 3.4 when it dies.

thx jx for puttin my pages together, ya ive been told that it is best to stick with the same manufacturer such as in another toyota engine, wheather it be a supra inline 6cyl, or a newer 3.4L 4runner engine (maybe with a supercharger) as i was told by channer.

ohh ya also, does TRD make a supercharger for a 3.0L jus incase i have to stick with my engine for quite awhile longer. I didnt think that they did, but jus makin sure.

How much HP/TQ does that Supra straight 6 put out anyway? (thats what I voted for btw, I agree with jx94148 and sticking with a toyota motor).

I'd go with the Supra motor because they make a twin turbo version (I've heard if you modify them right, they can put out around 500 hp!!!). They only thing is that the rear diff/axle(?) and transmission will need to be replaced if you're going to have that much power going to it. If I ever get the $$ that's what I'd like to do.

Turbo 7MGTE Supra motors can be tweaked to make 620+ HP and 640+ torque. You have to upgrade the turbo, injectors, fuel pump, pressure regulator, etc and fit a big old intercooler in there.
The tranny of 4Runners and trucks are very similar in terms of stregnth. There are several guys running around with Supra motors on stock truck drivelines. I guess you need a clutch and bellhousing from a non-turbo Supra and that will bolt to your stock tranny, IIRC.

Do the 3.4L it is much more reliable than the 7MGTE. The 7M's have similiar head gasket problems as the 3.0L. The only head gasket problems they ever had with the 3.4L was when it first came out, they would leak externally on the front left bank of the block and the back right bank of the block. Most of the 3.0L's would leak internally on one of the coolant channels on the back left bank of the block. Put a truck engine in your truck, not a car engine in your truck. It's also a lot less "hacking" to install the 3.4L.

if you want tons of fun-- you need a 2JZ-GTE, that is the crazy ass inline 6 twin turbo that puts out 320HP ( underrated ) -- and modifying these is a breeze-- the shop in sacramento Motorsport Dynamics built a 1100rwhp supra with this engine with the STOCK CRANK!!!! and let me tell you-- this thing is absolutely ridiculous. If you want to call them 916-648-8000 they are real helpful and have tons of aftermarket parts for this thing.

I have done swaps both with vortec v8's, and 4.3's. I prefer the 4.3, fits nicely, and lots of get up and go, and alot easier to repair unlike the toy motors...

I voted for the Supra engine because it's the only Toyota engine on the list.
I'm not sure what you want to accomplish performance wise, but what about a 3.4L from a 3rd gen 4Runner or newer Taco? They are reliable and has an available S/C if you want the added performance.

The hp and torque numbers quoted above for the 7M-GTE are incorrect. '87-88 models had 230 hp @5600 RPMs and 246 ft lbs @ 4000 RPMs. '89-92s make 2 more hp and 8 ft. lbs more torque.
The headgasket problems on these engines are due to undertorqued cylinder heads from the factory. Toyota only torqued them to 58 ft lbs when engineers determined that they should have been to 72 ft. lbs. Mine is torqued to 83 ft. lbs using ARP headbolts.
As for the diff and tranny comments--you can safely run 700+ hp through the V6 R150F tranny and even the 320 hp twin turbo Supra uses an IRS version of the 8" V6 4x4 differential. I rode in a 786 hp Supra three weeks ago--he drags and auto-xs all the time and has never had driveline problems.
The 7M-GTE has been called one of the cheapest motors in the world to modify for power & torque. I just added a cone-style K&N air filter, full 3" exhaust and turned the boost up from 6.8 psi to around 8.5 psi on mine. My hp went from 230 hp to 320 hp. Friends of mine are making well over 550 hp by completing the above mods plus a Lexus V8 AFM housing ($100), Lexus V8 fuel injectors, twin turbo fuel pump and fitting a larger compressor wheel to the Toyota turbo ($450).
Guess which engine I voted for.

dang, the supra engine is soundin nice, and it seems a lot cheaper. one of the only reasons i wouldnt want the 3.4L even though i do like it, is becuz then i'd want to get a TRD supercharger for it and pay at least 2000 for it. Oh and im sorry for not puttin the 3.4L on my poll, i should have. Well how much would turbos cost for the supra I-6? and does anybody know a good site for supra engine performance parts
