Better start cycling, I'm down in Morgan Hill and pay that for premium at my local Chevron, which actually has the best prices. About 2.15 for regular here, look for a different station as they vary a lot here in the Bay Area.

man that's a lot of gears! i have a 1984 specialized "hard rock" that i want to replace with something nice and light soon(i bought it for 50 bucks about 5 years ago), i've figured that i only typically ever used about 5 of the speeds. usually get started off in the lowest setting, bring up the crank shifter into the highest range then usually made a couple of clicks to get into the high range on the wheel. mine's a 21 speed, and it's 20 years old!

well the gas is set up for elevation and such. so rather than read the numbers 85/87/91, i read it as low/medium/high no matter where i am. in my subaru and saab, i can get away with running low. my subaru is smart enough to really advance the timing if i put high octane in it, and i do notice quite a power increase, but it's not worth it to me because then i tend to go faster and burn more gas and it's a vicous cycle of expense for me. in my both 4runners, i need to run at least mid octane gas, sometimes i need high in the summer. and that's solely because the engines will ping like crazy on low.

because the farmer lobby makes it so that we need to have ethanol in our gas. it costs more to make ethanol (at least it takes more energy than you get out of it - it'd be better to burn the corn directly, but don't get me started on this rant), and it had 10% less energy by volume so you get worse gas milage too. sucks bad. the only think i'd like the farmer lobby for would be to get the country to switch over to biodiesel - that's another rant i won't start, but biodiesel is the greatest stuff ever.

For the most part, in Colorado "regular" unleaded is 85 octane. Mid-grade is 87. Toyota states 87 octane to be used for us n/a types. Octane is lower here because with the lower atmospheric pressure 85 will run w/o detonation issues.

To add a little mud to the issue, I"ve got 5th hand info that Colorado cars get more headjobs than any other state.

Low grade is 85.5 here in bozeman as well. Elevation has a big impact on what the octane rating is. I think it has something to do with the air being thinner (less oxygen in it)

Any gas I can find, as long as it's cheap (which is nearly impossible). I paid $2.21 today for REGULAR 87 OCTANE GAS!!! That was at the cheapest place in town (Arco).

The most I've ever paid is $2.41 (in Tahoe).
Least has been $1.50~

I can remember paying $0.89 a gallon a few years back when I worked in New Jersey where gas is cheap. Those were the days.

Sam's in OKC. My last fill up was $1.699 for premium. I get a 5 cent discount for being a Sam's club member. So $1.749 for non-members.
