What is this on the back of my head? (22re)

Well, i am just about finished with my adventure into doing a headgasket on my 93 22re...and when filling up my antifreeze, I get a leak on the back of the head. Right around where the metal lines bolt down to. There is a brown/copper colored thing that is bolted there, and coolant looks to be coming from there...

What is this thing that is bolted to the head, and why is coolant coming out?
Could i have forgotten a bolt?

Besides filling up the antifreeze..I just have to add some oil and time the thing..

Thanks in advance for the help

-J

Yea there is a plate on the back of the head that has coolant behind it. What purpose is serves I dont know but that is probably where your leak is coming from.

thanks for the replies. Ya that is where it is comin from...for some reason there was only one bolt holding it on. I broke one bolt putting it back on. Are sure it is 6 bolts holding it on. I can only see 3....but then again it is hard to see anything back there.

Well it is leakin only a little now..but I fired it up and have fuel spraying from where it looks to be the banjo bolt on the fuel rail...the gas smell gave me a headache, and i called it a night..

Thats probably your cold start injector so No

That gasket is a B-tch to replace with the head on the motor mainly because is hard to clean the mating surface up against the fire wall

it's either 5 or 6 bolts. the only way you can get a gasket besides going to the dealer(not the most convenient thing most of the time for me, toyota of olympia never has anything in stock -- they had to special order me a 22R head gasket...) is to either buy a topend rebuild kit(head, intake, egr, exhaust gaskets etc) or get an exhaust manifold gasket set(beware, some don't have them in it, i know felpro's does). i had forgotten that i had one lying around in my junk pile so i just used a layer of gray RTV and no problems so far.

most of the time the bolts have the front of them covered in rusty gunk, might be wise to wire wheel them off before re-installing. remember not to put too much torque on them, use a 1/4" ratchet to make that a little easier.
