Weird rub in front of 3rd Gen 'Runner

Whenever I go forward from being parked for 5 minutes or more I feel this short rub from up front. Every time, without fail, I back out of wherever I'm parked, through it into drive, and within 10 feet or so feel this rub. Sometimes when it's real quiet around I can here something that sounds like sliding and then it rubs. The whole slide/rub sequence takes about 1-1.5 seconds. It does it without backing up, so I've eliminated reverse-then-forward as the culprit. I've never tested it without putting it in Park, so I don't know if that has anything to do with it yet. Also, I haven’t tested it by starting off in 4wd. I've been told (and thinking) it’s in the drive shafts and after reading of similar sounds in the rear, I think my front driveshaft may not be properly lubricated.

On an unrelated note, I’ve been having starting problems (3 times since I’ve got the truck in mid-Dec). What happens is the engine turns over but I get no ignition. At first I was thinking it may be bad brushes, but after having it happen again, it sounds like the starter has plenty of juice and that there may not be any fuel getting in there. There’s a good chance it has the factory fuel filter, so I’m going got be replacing that. If anyone else has any opinions I’d be glad to hear them.

Rubbing sounds like brakes to me. Maybe you have a sticky caliper?

The non start issue....I'd do a full tune-up on it. Clean MAF, Throttle Body, change plugs, wires, & fuel filter. It's normal maintainence and I'm sure one of those is causing your problem.

Described Perfectly

I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT. Well, not exactly. Mine does the exact same thing. After I start the truck, I can back out of a parking spot. I then naturally put it in drive. About 3 seconds after driving forward, I hear a low pitched sound that changes in pitch to an even lower pitched noise. Like a shoe being scuffed slowly on a clean kitchen floor. What the heck is that. Mine has done it since day one. I now have 95000 miles and no problem, I thought it may be the brake booster or power steering kicking in. It doesn't matter if I back out first or just pull forward. I too am now intriged by the noise and am interested in others theories. Does anyone else hear this?

That actually is a very good description. You should turn the radio off sometime and see if you can hear the sliding noise I here sometimes right before the rub.
