Verify Fuel Tank Size in '99

I just picked up my ScanGauge and was configuring it. My manual says I have a 15.4 gal fuel tank but looking at other sites I see specs for the 3rd gen 4Runners have tanks up to 18.5 (http://www.top4runners.com/ja/runhist319962.html). Even with my fuel light on I have never put over 14 gal. in it. So I'm leaning towards the 15 gal range. Can someone verify\confirm this?

Thanks!

I've been going through the same problem. Check post #9 on this thread https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f2/3...em-pics-60260/
Also, check this for the fix and to see if your VIN is one thats affected. http://pages.sbcglobal.net/larsdenne...Inaccurate.htm My tank is 18 gallons by the way.

18.5 as far as I can tell and make sure you don't have the dreaded fuel gauge/sender recall issue because your light will go on when there is 5 gallons left in the tank.
I've learned to live with it.

P.S.........don't over fiill and top off crazy because strange things can happen.

me.......charcoal cannister saturated with gas ....horrible smell
No topping off......no more smell

my buddy........we filled up .....he loves topping off........got no further than his driveway and the car was dead!
Towed to Toyota for some backed up fuel in the engine..........meanwhile....we drove the car for 3 days straight on a trip before that fill up!

Also remember there will be a between 1-2 gallons of unuseable fuel since the fuel pump pickup doesn't sit on the bottom of the tank. The general consensus when people are filling up when on "empty" seems to fill up between 15-16 gallons. My average when I think it's getting empty is usually a little over 15 gallons and the most I've ever filled up with was 16.1.

I have symptoms of the dreaded fuel gauge issues and I've run out twice. Coasted and refired both times to roll into a gas station (knocks on wood). But both times it's happened, I've only been able to get 15.3 gallons into the tank. I have a couple dents in the tank so it's possible the pickup line was moved as well.

From the owner's manual for the 99:

Fuel
Fuel type:
Unleaded gasoline, Octane Rating 87 (Research
Octane Number 91) or higher
Fuel tank capacity, L (gal., Imp. gal.):
70 (18.5, 15.4)

15.4 Imperial gallons maybe, my guess is you have 18.5 gallon tank. This week my 4runners "empty" light came on (normally that is around 14-15 g), I drove it about 60 miles further at filled up 17 gallons.

roadtrip is right - 18.5 US gallons = 15.4 Imperial gallons...my gas light goes on with 2 gallons (US) left every time. So i know i can get another 30-40 miles depending.

Thanks guys. Yes, he's right about the Imp. Gal being 15.4. I double checked this morning and I noticed I swapped the numbers from the manual (15.4 to 18.5). So I reset my ScanGauge to 18 Gallons. On a side note, it looks like I also have that dreaded low fuel light issue, but I'm not going to let that bother me. It comes on around 13.5 gallons, it's just good to know I have a extra gallon or two in reserve if I need them. I found I nice mounting location for my ScanGauge. I'll post pics tonight.

thanks again!

another thing you have to consider is that when you "fill up" your not actually filling up. I think i saw it on an episode of "How It's Made" on Discovery channel where the product is fuel tanks and they said that typically the tanks are only filled to 80% capacity.

Like I pointed out there will be close to two gallons that the fuel pump can't pick up;even if you run out of gas you won't fill it back up with even 17 gallons.

on the episode of filling a 4runner 99 you damn sure do get 18.5 gallons in it. more if you fill the neck

program scangauge for 18 gallons, 3.4 liter engine, and then when you
start to program fillups your percentage should settle 3-6% to allow for variations
in different pumps.

if the 4runner tank only gets filled to 80% that means the whole tank could hold
23.125 gallons 100% stuffed...cuz I know when dry... I can fill it up to 18.51 gallons

yours maybe, that isn't normal. I ran mine dry and there was less than a pint left. it stalled 3 times but I dang sure got it started again and sucked that thing clean. then I dropped it and poured out the rest.

And will lead to charcoal canister failure and can lead to possible damage of associated parts;fuel needs to expand when it heats up so overfilling is asking for trouble. Don't fill the neck at all**
Do some reasearch on how our fuel systems work since it's not a simple tube running to the injectors.

I know some people will squeeze in more at the expense of a possible problem but for the average owner it seems 15-16 gallons is the norm. There's no benefit to overfilling anyway except extend your range a little.

if you ever read any of my other posts you'd know I stop when the pump handle clicks first time

do you want the page numbers that explain just the evap systems, or all pages that explain fuel ? I have everything
ever published by toyota about my 99 4runner, except toyota internal documents

Just my 2 cents - I fill up 17-18+ gallons from empty pretty frequently. I like to run from full to bone dry to keep an eye on mileage. I have had my runner for 2 years and have not run into any issues. Now, for what it's worth, I also do NOT park on steep inclines front side down after filling up. Infact in most cases I am topping off before heading out on a road trip.

So, I guess I'm making 2 points here.. my 98' has an 18.5 gallon tank and I have not had issues with filling all the way up.

P.S. - the pump clicks off every time at 16 gallons or so. If you look at where the filler tube enters the tank, it is on the side; near, but not at the top of the tank. I think this is the cause of pump cut off.

My 99 has a 18.5g tank. How do I know this? Ran it just about bone dry, It was stuttering as i was going to the gas station and died about 100yards from it. Luckly I was able to roll into the station to the pump. I put in 18.4 gallons.

I guess I was misled by you saying you can fit more by filling the neck up which may lead others to do so and that is overfilling.

Still this subject has no bearing on MPGs and really doesn't matter when people fill their tanks as long as they don't run out of gas. I regularly fill up at around 250 miles in my tank and my (so-so accurate) guage is just a tad below the E and I usually fillup with about 15.5-16 gallons which works for me.

I guess I am glad to know in a dire situation I do have another gallon or two to burn but by then I know down to my last 30 miles or so in my tank.

Thanks for the replies. As stated here are a couple of pics of where my ScanGauge is mounted. I had to throw a blanket over the windows (even though it was 10PM) to get the true color of my guages. I'll get normal ones today.
