Hi all,

Trying to figure out the best bang for the buck way to hook my Ipod directly to the factor CD/tape (no changer) stereo in my 4Runner.
I don't want to use an FM modulator as I hear the sound isn't that great.
I was looking at item # 120396612645 on Ebay. Would that work?

hey mike,

i have a similar product on my 2000 4runner cd/radio/tape player in my '88 4runner.

just hit the cd button twice to switch it to the aux input.

i found that i had to turn up the volume a bit more when using the ipod.

My 2000 still has the stock radio that you have. I bought an adapter from car toys that plugs into the CD changer port on the back of the radio. You do have turn it up alot. It works well. I also have a truck that has a tape deck/radio. I use a tape adapter and it works great. The tape adapter is cheap.

 

just go down to best buy and spend 15 on the cassette to ipod jack. it works fine. then save your nickels for a decent new system in the future.

If you don't want to use an FM transmitter cuz of the quality, you wont be happy with a cassette adapter either - I went that route at first and was pissed that I wasted my money on something with such poor quality.
You either need a factory head unit with CD changer input, or you're gonna need an aftermarket setup to hook directly in for good sound quality.

i use the headphone input on my cd player. looks like you have to buy a aftermarket stereo with a headphone input or a usb input which is better.

 

That's funny, mine works great. It may not be the best sound but let's face it, you're driving in a car. Cars don't have the best sound anyway.

 

So it seems like all the factory HUs have the port in the back for where a disc changer would have gone.
Do you have to pull out the HU to plug in this Ipod2car device? Never pulled the HU on the 4Runner....anything special needed?
I used for the first time last night an old Panasonic tape adaptor and overall it didn't sound too bad. For around $50 I may try out the Ipod2car since it seems it charges the Ipod and you may be able to control the Ipod from the HU.

Do you know if 1999 4runner decks have a CD changer port on it?

 

I have a 99 limited and it had the port on it. Is yours a double din tape/cd/radio? If so, odds are you have it. Best thing to do as mentioned in those threads is ot check the back of your radio. If there is an open wire harness port then it will work.

 

Mine is a single disk w/radio, no tape. I sure hope it has it. All the aftermarket decks I've been looking at are way to flashy!

 

I have the USA spec ipod adapter in my 2000 4Runner and my 2005 Sequoia. They work great...I bought mine on ebay to save a little. I use them with ipods and my iPhone (also works as a charger, so great for the phone). They also have aux input in addition to the iPod input so you can plug in an XM radio or DVD player.

 

I have a 2000 limited with the type 2 (J17019) OE head unit which is supposed to be compatible with a ipod interface unit. The manual describes it as being CD changer compatible

With the ipod attached it charges but i cant change the stereo from CD 1 to CD changer mode by toggling the CD button multiple times.

Ive gone back and forth with the manufacturer but they tell me its install that's at fault. Theyve given me some troubleshooting tips but id like to like to here from others who have ran into this problem with this specific OE radio.
