I was wondering if anyone knows of a brand/color of paint that matches or comes close to the "aluminum" trim in the 3rd gens. The Speedhut threads have me psyched about finally getting my guages, and when I do I'd like to paint the bezel to match the silver trim. There are also a couple places that could use a touch-up on my existing trim. Anybody know of any?

 

Hey Vince. I think it would be almost impossible to get an off the shelf match...Best bet maybe to call a few paint suppliers and see if they have that computer scanner to match colors. You'll need to remove a piece of trim so they can scan it. It won't be in a rattle can so you may need to have someone spray it. Ask the paint shop for any leads on who will do a small job. Some of the paint shops around here will put it in rattle cans - pricey though.

 

To spray custom matched paint, I use this little spray can thingy I got at a local ace hardware. I saw it first at the paint shop I got my matched paint at. It's basically a glass jar on the bottom, with a small spray can screwed on top with a tube that goes down into the jar. The charged spray can eventaully runs out, but they're like $2 each so it's no biggie. I forgot what it's called, but I can go and check if you want me to.

 

Yea. Thats an airbrush DUB. They work really well and you can do an excellent job yourself. I find that spray bombs are really watered down. You just mix your paint with whatever thinner you need. Either laquer thinner or paint thinner. Either get some compressed gas or if you have an air compressor thats all you need. Profession results if have some basic spraying knowledge.

 

Oh yeah Dub, I've seen those. I think it's called Spra-zit or somrthing. A skinny glass jar with a screw-on rattle can with air. That would be the way to go with a custom mix. Just have to reduce the paint first...

 

I believe my uncle has something along those lines. It hasn't got an aerosol top but one similar to an airbrush, except that you can't adjust the amount of air/paint coming out. I'm not sure if he has an air compressor to connect it to though. It also sounds like getting a small amount of custom paint would be a little on the pricy side for only painting one piece. I guess I'll just look around at what's on the shelf, maybe try some basecoat/topcoat combos and see what's close. Thanks for the help!

 

Sorry, I wasn't at home the last time I posted, but I checked my tools, and this is what I use! http://www.prevalspraygun.com/ It works pretty well. I used it to spray my voltmeter pod, and my kickpanels with vinyl paint. One power unit and one jar cost about $7 from what I remember.
