TRD SC Longevity

So while my SC sits on the bench waiting for it's parts some questions have come to the front of my mind. How long will this unit last and will it be compatible with the larger number of miles I put on my truck. I guess I'm just worried about being stranded in the middle of no where with a SC problem. I'm also on the fence about whether to install it pre-URD fuel kit. The kit isn't in the budget just yet so I'm unsure as to run it as it is. I'm running 4:88's and uncertain if I would be plagued with high speed low rpm ping.

IMHO if you can't afford the added fuel needs don't put it on yet.

Roger that, as this was my initial plan but when it just sits there and mocks you you start to let it get to you.

I have been running my 1st gen SC since the truck was born over 128K miles ago with no fuel upgrades and no apparent issues. Yes, I have some HSLrpm knocking, but I have learned to drive accordingly. I don't just squish the pedal when I want to go faster, I punch it then let off and wait for the downshift then mash it. The thing is great 99.9% of the time.
The truck is not a race car and I don't drive it that way. Oh, by the way, I don't even run super unleaded.
It would be a shame to have it sitting there and not get some enjoyment out of it.

I'm sure it's tempting, but you're doing the right thing by waiting. It's funny because I often hear people say that they have ran their rig for xxxxxx miles with no fuel/timing mods and no issues. Well, your engine didn't blow up...but what does each piston head look like? Are the rods stressed and has longevity been compromised? I've said it before and I'll say it again: Audible ping, or lack thereof, should never be the determining factor to going with fuel/timing mods or not.

Properly install an EGT gauge on a non-fuel/timing modded SC'd rig and your face will turn white when you see the spikes and drops in temp as it goes lean and tries to dump fuel (that isn't available) to compensate.

Ok so it's settled, the SC will not go into until I Have the provisions to hook it up and feed it right. Now while I should start a new thread but what will I need to properly feed my new (used) SC. I'm not big on gages and yes I know I should use them to keep an eye on things so perhaps they can go stealth and live somewhere else. I have a laptop so in car in transit tuning is no problem. URD will be my go to guys for after market support. So lets get a list going.

What kind of list are you looking to make? Their kit pretty much gives you everything you need (as you may know). Granted, I went a different route - I'd call it the "budget" route:

SMT6 piggyback $300
Supra NA 308cc injectors $100
Walbro 190 $75
2-step colder plugs $25
170 thermo $13
Reflective heat tape on the fuel line $10
Coolant bypass mod (been running this mod for 3 years now, no issues - ever) $3
Super unleaded of course
TOTAL: Around $600 (some odds and ends I may have left off)

In Phoenix I had to retard 11 degrees of timing on the map in places due to the ambient temps (figure 3-5HP loss for every degree of retarded timing). Here in the Pacific Northwest I was able to advance it to -6 (instead of -11) due to cooler temps, higher humidity, and 92 octane (vs 91). You'll find that you need to retard most between 2K and 3K RPM, 30%+ throttle position.

Sorry I am going on a tangent again, lol. Now, about that list...

Well I gues the list would come into which and hoe many units from URD.

They have the std. 6 injector sc kit for about $1k and also suggest a 7th injector.

replacement pulley 2.37 (stock TRD) to 2.2?

what kind of software and controller in the event I don't go the URD route

I'm looking for simple to control (installation will be about the same for most) and reliable down the road. I like the idea of the budget route but lets see what we can come up with.

URD will be your complete package and I believe they offer tech support. If you go SMT or similar, you'll probably not have the same level of support (a few of the guys that ran the SMT like me appear to not be posting here anymore). With a fuel/timing kit you can safely run a little more boost, hence the pulley change (but it's not necessary). At a minimum you should get the $1K kit.

Keep your eyes peeled for a used URD kit. They pop up every now and then on here.

Oh how I know they come up now and again I missed on for sale from the gentleman I purchased the SC from but could not afford both at the same time. Ok so while there are less expensive ways to go support (Gadget) and reliability will come with URD.

One or the other, not both.

Yeah a 2.2 pulley is nice too.

What year is your truck?

As far as gauges, I look at my coolant temp, EGT, wide band A/F gauges the most, after that I look at my oil temp, trans temp some and lastly the boost gauge gets little attn.

One other nice box to have is the A/F calibrator (or AFR calibrator as URD calls it) but I need to know what year/model truck you have.

So another $250..... sheesh this SOB is gettin pricey.

URD AFR $249

URD 6 Injector Fuel/Timing Upgrade for TRD 5VZ-FE Supercharger $1099

URD 2.2" Pulley $129

Looks like I will buy stock slowly and hope for an install toward the end of January. Also will keep an eye out for a used system

URD fuel upgrade kit is a NECESSITY for the TRD supercharger despite what toyota claims. also, the extra work of installing the SC twice is not all that convenient either. Fuel pump, injectors (these are the only thing required to remove the SC), spark plugs and an hour of soldering the FTC unit is worth everything. No check engine lights, no hassle and awesome performance, you won't be dissapointed!

Getting 227 hp at the wheels with my 4wd taco thanks to URD. (also have alcohol injection, DT headers and 2.5" exhaust and a 2.2" URD pulley which helps)

Getting 8.09psi of boost vs. the 6psi on the stock pulley.

But at a bare minimum, do the URD kit at the same time as the SC install it's worth it
