Question Transmission problem, need help?????

My 1994 toyota 4runner auto tranny has sorta taken a dump. It hecka slips, so I thought no brainer, I need a new tranny. But the thing is it still works totally fine in 4wd low. So anyone who knows how these trannys are set up with the transfer case please help me out. I am pretty sure I need a new tranny. My only confusion is that it works in 4wd low with no slipping whatsoever. So anyone with knowledge that could point me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you...

there is much less load placed on the trans while in 4low, so it doesn't slip as bad (not enough for you to notice)

Have you checked your fluid level lately? Low fluid will cause slipping...

Ya I checked the fluid and is fine, and I just replaced the fluid a couple months ago anyways. So you think its basically shot then??? Is there anything I can do to fix the problem or just buy a new tranny???

New or rebuilt tranny is the way to go and may be the only answer to your problem. Some people claim that changing the fluid can cause problems on older models but I don't know how true it is.

When you replaced the fluid, did you just drop the pan or did you get it completely flushed out?
If merely dropped the pan, there is still a lot of old, junky fluid in the torque converter that could be making your tranny perform poorly.

Probably $1000 for a rebuild of your tranny, probably AT LEAST $2000 for a new one.

They both offer kits and manuals to DIY.
