Transmission Damaged Bad??

Well,

Last night scared the $#@! out of me. I towed my bass boat to friends house to get worked on. His drive way is really steep and I tried to back the boat up into his driveway to drop it off. 3/4 way up the hill, the tranny grinded, pretty damn loud in reverse. I stopped, drove down and had my buddy take it up with his 1500 Chevy.

You guys think that there was some major damage to my tranny?? BTW, its an 99 3.4 Automatic

Please let me know, thanks a lot

Tranny

Not a good sign, when was the last time you had the tranny fluid completely flushed? Have you checked the color on it after that incident? Some things to think about.

Yeah, we need more info. What's the history on the vehicle? How many miles? Maintenance performed? Etc...

Sure thing.

Its a 99 Limited 3.4 liter V6 Automatic. Has 50k and I flushed the transoil at 45k and filled it with Amsoil. Diff and trans case flushed at about the same time with Amsoil. Engine oil is changed every 4k miles with driveshaft lube. Hope that is enough info.

I forgot to mention that the car shut off after the griding, but started right up again. What you guys think? I just got this bass boat so I havent been towing it a lot.

yeah i have an extended warranty until 150k or 5 years.

I dont notice any damage when driving, but really not sure what the inside of the tranny looks like.

Tranny problems

Hmm, checked with my techs out in the shoop and we haven't heard of anything like that. One thing though, my heavy line tech said if it shut the engine off it should have a code on it. Almost always if the engine shuts down the computer will have a code or two explaining what it is Even though you don't see any lights or warnings. Their recomendation would be to get it to a dealership ASAP! With that low of mileage and proper maintenance you got a problem somewhere. Hope this helps and let us know what you find out please.

Well, I wouldnt want to be left stranded, so I would get the Runner into the shop ASAP. Most likely they will be unable to duplicate the problem unless one of the tech's has a bass boat

Seriously though, with that kind of warranty coverage, and the desciption you gave us, I would have it checked out right away.

I never had a problem with my Auto tranny on my 98, and I treated it like I was a tester for Consumer Reports.

I have a warranty from warrantygold. they have been great. I got the bumper to bumper coverage so the transmission is covered, just dont know what the deal is on towing.

i dont have a problem taking it in the shop, but like you said, how can they diagnose the problem. i am hoping that the damage is minimal, like a bad stick shift driver griding gears hahaha. any more thoughts?

You should still be covered under the 5 year 60K Toyota powertrain warranty.

No they probably won't be able to duplicate the problem. However, they can run the diagnostics on it and see if there are codes that show up. I would highly suggest doing this ASAP.

Actually, you should hope the damage is HUGE. That way you will get a whole new tranny instead of a rebuild to the effected part.

Like I said sometimes there are codes even if there aren't check engine ligts on. Happens all the time here at the dealership.

5 year, 150K mile warranty? How much did you pay for that! I am shocked any private company would have a warranty exceeding 100K miles.
