Transfer case blues..

First post here. I live in Japan and have a 1997 3.0 turbo diesel. It's been an awesome rig, but just this week I detonated the Xcase while going uphill in about two foot of snow.

The problem is mine is a manual (multi-matic), and most rigs here are autos. The toyota dealer is telling me that the cases are different. My stock one has a PN of 36110-35292. I can't find a used one, so am contemplating sticking in one off an auto(PN of 36110‑35142), which are plentiful.

Any idea if this would work? I think the cases are the same, dimensions are same, just the guts are different. I really would appreciate the help as otherwise I'm looking at a new one from the dealer for about $1600

Cool

Well I think it got it figured out. There were three cases made for the 3rd gen 1KZ. One full time, one for manuals and one for autos and they can all be interchanged if a guy finds cause for doing so.

But that don't matter to me because it was the front diff that I busted, not the Xcase! I pulled it out last night, finished up at 2am. It was snowing, about -12 C with about a meter of snow already on the ground. I could only get my rig halfway in my buddy's shop due to height, so it was cold.

It was not as easy as I figured. We started at 8pm, six hour job total. I figure half that time we were drinking beer and trying to warm up by the heater, so who knows how long really takes. It looks like the spider gears were trashed. Wonder why that happens? Low oil? Heavy foot?

Anyway, the 4wd now works well, but the 4wd light just flashes when engaged, whereas before it only blinked for a bit when disengaging. Any idea why this would be? I would think that it has something to do with that little electrical plug on the side on the diff. What does it do?

Thanks for the help....

on ours there is a sensor that detects whether or not the ADD is locked, make sure thats alright, if its not, it can cause it to flash.

Thanks Yukon. But I went out this morning cranked it up and the 4wd was working perfectly. I was thinking that the used assembly I stuck in there maybe had a different ADD sensor, but I guess not. All is well.

good deal, at least you figured it out instead of paying 1600 for a new one and not even needing it...

Yeah, would have been a very bad deal. I have broke a few transfer cases over in my time on Chevys and Fords and when this thing broke it seemed no different when it started howling and popping and just plain sounding like bulldozer going 50 MPH.

Anyway nobody here believed I could bust the transfer case before the front end and it only took a jack and about 30 seconds to figure it out. Learned something though, with the front end broke, or the front driveshaft disconnected, if you push the part time button the whole rig goes nowhere. Kinda interesting.

A new front diff unit costs $1800 here! I found a decent one at the local junkyard for $120. Plus beer. Good deal! cept the wife telling me how the gear oil in my hair stinks like hell! Gives her a headache! I kinda like it though.

Yup, sounds like a bad sensor, read this, it describes the possible issue and solution.
