Tranny Shot Need Advise

Hey all,
Well my tranny is shot. Bummer of a deal too. Took it to AZ to have my dad drop the pan and change the filter, did all that and it did no good. There was "debris" in the pan, on the magnets, and a tad on the filter. My bro-in-law said the fluid was burnt too. So we drove it back here to Cali. and now it seems to be worse. I called Toyota and they want 3G's to rebuild it. I was wondering if anyone knows of any place here in San Diego or Poway that is reputable and will do a good job? If need be I will take it to Toyota but I was trying to get around it for financial reasons. I do know it is going to be expensive to rebuild so we are going to have to eat Cup O Noodle for the next year to be able to get it repaired. Aw well, poop happens just gotta live with it.

Here is my Toy stats:
95 4Runner
V6
Auto Tranny (pos)
141K miles
4WD

If anyone knows of someone please let me know now so I can start saving. LOL

Thanks to everyone who helped me before too, I appreicate it!

Why don't you look into buy a used one from a junkyard. Sure....It might have a few miles on it, but you'd save youself a ton of cash. To me 3G's is a lot to dump on a vehicle that's got 141K on it. Just my 2 cents.

Hey Mikey,
Thanks man, actually I had talked that over with my hubby and he said the only thing with that is you don't know when that one will go? I guess if I could get one with "relatively" low miles for even half the price of a rebuilt one it couldn't hurt. I just want my poor baby to work again, we share some pretty good memories *winks*.

I would buy a "recycled" (sounds better then junkyard) transmission. I just picked up a 5spd for my '97 for $500Cad. Took me about 5 hours to put it in with a friend. This one had only 20.000km on it.

The newest 4wd tranny you could use without issue is out of 95 runners. It is the fluid sharing bastard auto of the Toyota line.

You could use one of the new trannies, but you would have to get an adaptor for a passenger side front output and add a gear drive case. Likely more time and money than is practical.

I dont think the tranny will bolt up from a 3rd gen.

Shoot, for 3G's you could score a nice one off ebay, steal the tranny from it, then part it out or sell it as is, and practically come out even.

Keep your eye on ebay. That's my vote.

It sure will bolt up, that is how people get 3.0 auto crawlers. Bellhousing switch and go.

That doesn't sound like a bolt-on ordeal to me.

I don't think a 9 or newer tranny will work since it will bolt up to the engine but if you have 4wd then the transfer case is in the wrong orientation. The other problem is the inputs from the ECU to control the shifts. If you are going to do this, you need to do a full swap for a 3.4L, otherwise hunt for a low mile 3.0L tranny.

Not a big deal, you just need a special front driveshaft with a lot of U-joints .
Sorry couldn't resist.

Yes, you can bolt it. No fabrication needed. Swap the bellhousing and some wiring. Read this http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/tech/autocrawler/

Yes, you need a different case, let may say again. You get an adaptor from Marlin and add a gear drive case.

Reality and arm chairing at it's best.
