Tranny question

When the weather starts to get cold, I notice my truck does not shift into drive right away. The rpm's will rev up and eventually shift. its only happens on initial startup and stops once the tuck is warm. anyone ever had this problem? any ideas why this could be. Any suggestions would be appreciated

Just to make sure, did you mean drive or overdrive? If you meant overdrive, please see below:

Your rig won't shift into overdrive until you are completely up to operating temperature....obviously that takes longer now that it is cold outside.

I am having the same issue on my 2nd Gen. The Trans shop says that there is a check valve that is supposed to keep fluid from draining from the transmission back into the pan....sometimes this valve sticks open and the fluid drains back. When you start the truck up, the transmission must re-prime itself by pumping the fluid from the pan back into the system. I just start my truck up and let is sit for a minute before I shift into gear.....this seems to work until I can get it back into the Trans shop for them to check it out.

I think it might be overdrive. I'm amazed that you said this because that was my initial thoughts. I pondered this idea because as soon as it warmed up.....no problem. I'm so glad to hear you say that. why would they do this??

I think they do it to keep you from going 90 mph before the engine is properly warmed up.

I think it also has to do with emissions. Not being able to shift into overdrive causes a higher engine rpm. This sends more hot gases through the exhaust system. The quicker the catalytic converter heats up, the faster it starts to "work".
