You guys look like a knowledgable crew, I have a 96 4runner w/ the factory towing package. For the life of me I can't get my trailer lights to work. I am not getting any current to the wiring harness that comes off the back tail lights but the tail lights work, is there a seperate fuse that I am missing? I already replaced the tail light converter but it still isn't working

Do you have a multi-meter?

 

Have you followed the wiring into the cab? It goes under the carpet in the cargo area, but I am not sure where it ends up.

Mind didn't work because I had a ton of corrosion in the connector.

 

No I don't have multimeter just the standard basic volt meter.

I have traced the wiring into the back of the truck, behind the storage space by the wheel well and bipassed the taillight converter, I purchased an after market 5 to 4 converter and still no juice.

 

What exactly is the converter? I am having similar problems with my T100 and told byt the trailer place that the trailer was fine but it might be a faulty converter. Where is this mysterious converter located? How does one test it?

Ok, it was not a bad ground it did indeed end up being this converter. The trailer place replaced the converter and the problem was solved.

 

I just fixed the same problem on my 2000 4Runner Limited and it was also the tail light converter. Called the dealer and he had never even heard of it. But still priced it out at $193. Found one at www.kwikhitch.com for $35 and just put it in yesterday. Presto! The lights worked.
I didn't follow the converters wiring. I just cut off their plugs and directly wired it to where the old converter used to be.

I had a professional trailer place fix it for me but from what I recall it is up under the bed at the back of the truck, you should be able to follow the wiring from the triler connector box by the hitch. Check out the website in the previous post to get an idea of what it may look like.
