Tires for the white stuff

Tires for the white stuff
I'm thinking about getting some new tires. I can imagine that the stock tacoma tires suck in the snow, and considering that I spend a large portion of the year at a place where there is a lot of snow, I think it'd be wise of me to invest in something better.
I've had the BFG AT's, not bad, but not as good as I'd hopped for. Are the BFG MT's any better?
I'm not really worried about how long they'll last, so long as it's over 30,000 miles. Road noise isn't that big of a deal either. I know I may sacrifice some things on the road, but I'd rather have a tire that I know will be amazing in the snow and have some other issues to worry about.

I was chastised by my father in law for not putting my smaller 31x10.5's on last winter but ya know what? My el cheapo 32x11.5 Pathfinder AT's did great in the snow and ice. I've had them for almost 4 years and 40k miles and they are still in decent shape. Ya ya I know it's sacrelidge to run a tire that says pathfinder in raised white letters on a 4Runner, ...so sue me! I have no shame!! OK OK I'll soon be shopping for newer better stronger cooler faster tires. I was thinkin maybe some Yokohamas.... but I'm wide open to suggestion. ....Yes and clearly I'm open to ridicule here too.

Hi David
How many more years do you plan to be in Bozeman?
MT's are probably going to be worse than AT's as far as BFG tires are concerned. The lack of siping on the MT's doesn't help them much in snow and ice. I have run with BFG AT's in the snow in eastern Washington for 3 winters, and they do pretty well. They have more edges in their tread than the MT's, which I think helps.
Many people strongly believe in Revo's, so you might consider those as well.
Good luck.

Question # too many: If I've got 16's on my truck from the factory, would 15's fit? Wheels of course.

if a second set of winter tires is a posibility for you, then i suggest the bridgestone winter dualers (it's the light truck version of the blizzak). i had them on last winter and they were great. one night i got out of work late and thought it'd be fun to do donuts in the empty parking lot. i couldn't do it, no matter how hard i tried. i've read reports that they're even better than studded tires on ice, but i didn't believe it until i tried them out.

Here's what you need: http://www.bridgestonetire.com/CA_EN/dpp/glamourindex2.asp?passproductid=1077
Here's what I'm looking at getting: http://www.bridgestonetire.com/CA_EN/dpp/glamourindex2.asp?passproductid=503
I've had Blizzaks on other vehicles and I swear by them!

I ran my Yok Geolandars A/Ts through some really deep stuff on and off road last year and they handled great. Here in the Denver area I couldn't see running true snow tires if the roads are still dry a good portion of the winter since dedicated snows will just wear out faster plus the Yoks have a 40k warranty which is 10k miles shy of the Revos but still a decent tire.

I used to live in the white stuff. As said above these are sweet tires for both snow and ice--you can stop on a dime. bridgestone winter dualers the truck version of the blizzak. I have revos right now and they are great in everything else--I haven't heard about them in the snow--look up the reviews on tirerack.com I wouldn't recomend the donuts in the blizzak--I toasted a set after one night of playing in my younger years(young and stupid!)

Go with the REVOS! I got mine at Costco for a SWEET price and that included lifetime balance and rotation, hazard replacement etc, which I have used! I hit a freaking drain pipe along the road at over 45mph and put a large knot on the front tire, they replaced it free to me no questions asked! It was a heck of a wack, threw the front end way out of, bent a T bar bad stuff, really bad stuff, the REVOS are GREAT tires though and with a 50,000 mile warranty how can you loose!

Revos are just a tire, just like any other tire. Yoko makes a good tire, this is true, but Revos are no different than Bridgestone or Goodyear or Michelin street tires - they don't even have an aggressive tread. They're popular right now because they're new and because the tread looks cool. They won't do any better in snow than the stock tires you have now.

yes. me too.
ATs may be the better bet for snow, but i'm here to tell ya that a more aggressive tire ain't bad. my runner has seen some significant snow (the stuff here in so cal is usually nothing to write home about) and my MTRs did quite well. no problems at all.
